    New Memory :-)

I got some PC3500 (Mushkin) from David this week......it was in a review by Tarinder a few months back.

Its in my Asus A7N8X right now....two sticks......

the question is...how to set it?

Its running fine and dandy at 166 CPU external freq and 200 mem frequency at Cas2 and 6-2-2

    So thats pretty damn fast.....

BUT....should I be aiming to up the CPU ext bus speed? Its an Xp1700 and it jogging along at XP2600+ (12.5x166)

Being a bit of a git, I knocked the freq straight up to 200 and whacked the multiplier down to 8 giving a theoretical clock speed of 1600.....and it posted......but it rebooted before WinXP loaded....

so I guess (and I am a bit in-knowledgable on this) that you can't simply trade FSB for Multiplier and expect it to work.....

Is that just TOO MUCH bandwidth for my humble chip?

I have a SCSI system so my aim is alway to be within the correct PCI33 speed range ....and therefore try not to overclokc between the preset 100/133/166/200 by much at all....

AM I wrong? Does any of this make sense?

    Cheers in advance

You should also run you memory in sync with the CPU FSB as you get better performance that way.

I am running my CPU at 200FSB and my memory in sync with that, which mean the memory is also running at 200FSB/400MHZ.

i know my chip would do the same if i went lower than a multiplier of 11 confused the hell outa me when i could boot at 2.2GHz and not 2GHz

but hey its all funny electronics aint it

I may be horribly, horribly wrong about this, but I wouldn't worry too much about straying from the 100/133/166/200Mhz frequencies - I'd expect the a7n8x deluxe to have the PCI frequency locked extremely tightly, if not manually editable in the bios somewhere.

But get your FSB speed to equal your RAM clock speed. Synchronous mode is supposed to be the performance winner.

Yup, the PCI is locked at 33mhz . Its not editable though.

Zak with that memory you shouldn't have any trouble running it at 200FSB with pretty tight memory timings (6-2-2-2) however, you may need to up the DRAM voltage to 2.9v which I find gives it that stability needed to run higher.

If the system rebooted before winxp loaded it is likely that it's not the memory going too high but the chip not taking the higher FSB - it almost definitely will take the higher fsb of 200mhz so long as you up the vcore to 1.75 (or thereabouts).

There is a pretty new BIOS out for the NF7-S that seems to accept lower vcore for the same overclock - so upgrade to this and try it at:

    DRAM voltage: 2.9v
    CHIPSET voltage: leave at default
    AGP voltage: leave at default
    VCORE: 1.75v

Multiplier: 10 (should take 11 - but try 10 first)
    Processor frequency: 200FSB

Make sure you sync the FSB with the Memory frequency ... i.e. choose one of the preset ratios such as 3:3, 4:4, 5:5 or 6:6 (they all amount to the same thing).

Surely 200fsb should be reachable. Hope so.
