    should be fine

if it was bought 4 months ago will more than likely be 10/100, so upto 100mbit second, 1mbps will be nothing

also even if its crap and old, itll still have an ATA33 hard drive - thats 33mpbs to you and me, again more than enough, so will be fine for downloading rig i would have thought

You can run xp on well below the min spec, 233mhz, 64mb if you install it with a cpu/memory that meets the requirements first then put the old stuff back in..it will install with 56mb of system RAM cos I did it a few years ago.

If it really won't run XP try Windows 2000, just as good and will run on 32mb of RAM, JUST and a P1...some might say try various linux distro's but they take a lot of learning, especially to set one up to host a connection etc.

Hardware from 97 or even earlier won't limit a 1mbit connection, even if the HDD isn't working at it's full speed the connection would still be the limiting factor.

hes right, if its 233 + then it will be within the technical requirements of XP

but....it may run a little slow, id say 2000 server would be better, as it would be a helluva lot quicker, but if its faster than 233, and can handle XP fine, then thats the way to go

i used to run windows server 2003 on a p2-350 with no problems. pretty damn fast, actually. maybe the 768mb ram helped.

It does not have to be windows xp!

You could do it under windows 95 although i would not recomend it! Its its coming off a router then NT4 would be ok but otherwise i don't think there is any USB support under NT4. Windows 2000 or Windows XP would be ideal but any 98 onwards would be fine so long as its not windows ME (Yuck! ) I would say it could be done on anything P200 onwards if you start to go near 100 i think you might start to slow down the download rates.

I don't see why not. Admittedly it’s not going to be as stable as a Windows 2000 or windows XP machine but for a downloader it should be ok. So long as it’s a stable build and is setup right. It really depends also on the type of program you’re using to download as well.
