    New Build Advice

    Hello All,

I'm looking at building a new computer.

    I already have:
    OCZ ModXStream 600W Power Supply
    Gigabyte Geforce GTX 550 Ti

    I was looking at getting:
    • Intel Core i5 3570K
    • Corsair Memory Vengeance Jet Black Low Profile 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz
    • Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H
    • Liteon DVD+/-RW IHAS124-04
    • Seagate 1TB SATA 3 Performance Hard Drive OEM ST1000DM003
    • OCZ Agility 3 2.5" SATA III 120GB SSD Factory Refurbished
    • Fractal Design Define R4

    My budget is around £550.

The system will be mainly used for gaming. I plan to OC once I can afford a new CPU cooler.

Will these parts work well together? Will they OC well once I have a better cooler?

    Sam

All looks ok with the exception of a factory refurbished OCZ SSD.... wouldnt bother with that, either get a better branded new one or just don't bother at all.

    Re: New Build Advice

If it's for gaming you need to look at a more powerful graphics card, that 550 Ti is not going to handle modern games well at all.

You could save money by going for a cheaper CPU, a 3470 will save you £30 plus you can get a cheaper MB and won't need a CPU cooler.
Of course this still isn't enough for a new graphics card, but it will go someway towards it. Do you need a new DVD drive? Do you not already have one?
For most games a 3470 will be just as fast as even a 3770K, sometimes it even works out marginally faster for some reason.

Also it might be worth waiting for Haswell, by which time you might be able to afford a graphics card too.
Try to find out how much you could sell your current card for.

@Biscuit: I was thinking of going for Samsung 120GB 840 then saw refurbished OCZ SSD. What SSD would you pick for around £70 to £80?

    Thanks

    Re: New Build Advice

@Willzzz: I'm really planning on upgrading the GPU at a later date. I know it not really up to much but I just a good foundation(CPU, Mother Board) to build on. I plan on selling my old computer, I probably stick the GPU in there and use the cash rased my selling the old PC to put towards a new GPU.

    Thanks

Can anyone recommend any good cases around £75 to £80, I'm a little unsure about the Fractal Design Define R4.

    Thanks

Just remember the more you save now the sooner you can upgrade your graphics.

A 3570k won't help you game any faster than a 3470 in 99% of cases, but the graphics card will matter 99% of the time.

@Biscuit: I have just been looking at other SSDs. I have seen the Sandisk Extreme 120GB SSD - Solid State Drive - SDSSDX-120G-G25 seem to have better read and write speeds. What would be better out of the Sandisk and the Samsung?

    Thanks

Cant overclock though, i would agree overclocking is unnecessary but if he wants to do it then fair enough.

I have a Sandisk sat at home waiting to be used actually. I don't think there will be anything wrong with it but Samsung drives have a very good proven reputation for reliability. The Samsung in my netbook has been rocksolid (the previous model to that one, the 830). Remember that doesnt mean Sandisk are bad, they are just not as well known as the samsungs and dont have the same kind of following, it could prove to be equally as reliable. I took the risk to save a few bob.

I would mostly ignore speeds of SSDs, you wont notice the difference in day to day use, an SSD is faster than a hard drive, the differences between one and another are marginal and almost impossible to discern.

Have you considered looking at an AMD system? If you went for a 970 AM3+ chipset based board and an FX6300 you would get a very powerful system, save yourself a few quid and still be able to overclock. This chip performs well in modern games as they can utilize more threads.

I used to use AMD all the time few years back but I have just had some bad experiences with them and moved to Intel and have always found them soild.

Which bits are you unsure about? Can't make a recommendation unless we know what you like/don't like.

Personally at your budget i would recommend giving them another chance, you can get much better bang for buck. Obviously its entirely your decision, but there is nothing wrong with the FX series CPUs they are just as solid as what you get from intel, and there is more chance if you want to upgrade in the future, you will be able to do it on the existing motherboard rather than having to change everything, which is what you will have to do with Intel

Indeed, the fractal is a good case and you will struggle to do better for the price so we need to know what you are looking for to help.

    Re: New Build Advice

What worries me about the Fractal Design Define R4 is the sound damping. I feel like the Sound Damping material could keep heat in. Maybe I'm wrong to think that. It look a really nice case tho.

As long as you have plenty of fans moving the air through the case, you shouldn't have any problems.

    Re: New Build Advice

You really aren't going to be creating much heat with an i5 and a 550 Ti so I wouldn't worry about it.

Even with an overclocked i7 it still stays perfectly cool.
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/6102/f...t-revolution/6

PC components are becoming more and more power efficient which means less and less heat.
The 3470 especially is going to output very little heat.
