    Which P4 mobo???

after all the hassle with the DFI board i had (and now will be sent back) i now need a new P4 motherboard (P4 2.8ghz, dunno what type, got it a few months back)
i think i need a socket 478?? board (the last one i had was an 865PE, and the chip worked in an MSI MEGA 865)

there are too many boards/sockets etc to know which to get
dont want to go overboard on the price - dont need onboard gfx or sound, just need lan (wireless maybe ???), 8x agp, maybe a good range of clocking stuff in the BIOS, but not too bothered.
i was thinking of an ABIT IC-7 max2, but apparently the northbridge cooler is loud (defeats the point of my reserator....)

    any suggestions??
(on a pleading sort of note.... ive now been without my proper PC for 3 weeks now... i need to sort this out quickly)

    thanking you in advance...

Darren (will make sig when PC is back up and running)

I have an Abit IC7 Max 3 they are excellent, the features are great and theres no noise at all, dunno where u heard the Northbridge was noisy as it isnt. The IDE security works really well and all features includng SATA work flawlessly.

its the max 2 cooler that is noisy, not the max 3. plus the max 3 is a little more than i want to spend on my mobo

**EDIT** Also, while im thinking about it... whats the diff between an 865 and 875 mobo??

ASUS P400C-E Deluxe v2.0. After doing tons of reading up, that's what I went for 4 months ago. It's been a dream. Very happy chappie. PS, Northbridge fan is SILENT - as there isn't one. :-) Doesn't seem to limit overclcoking, either.

Why not try the Abit IS7-g the IC7Max 3's little brother uses the springdale chipset instead of the canterwood and a snip at £65 in some places now

    thnx for the help.

i think i'll go for the ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe. its a good £30 cheaper than the P400c, but i can see there being too much difference

With regard to the Northbridge issue, there's a known issue with the fans that Abit stick on some of their motherboards; basically after a while they go berserk and start whining. Abit will replace these, but I've found the most effective approach to be using a Zalman NB32J passive heatsink, http://www.quietpc.com/uk/vgamb.php, about halfway down the page.

well the P4 deluxe, the Abit Max 3 and the gigy 8knxp are all great mobos! And tend to all cost the same! I rank them as followed..

    1. Abit IC7 Max 3
    2. Gigabyte 8knxp Rev. 2
    3. Asus P4 deluxe

They are ranked by features... performance wise they are all the same!
