Gaming PC _ can you spec me?

    Hi Guys,

I am considering getting a new 'gaming' PC. My Current one (in my specs) is showing it's age now, especially on a 24" screen. Can you guys recommend me a £500 build? I've got mouse, keyboard, monitor etc and am happy building & install it all myself. I have a spare copy of Windows 7 from an ex-computer of the family!

    Cheers guys

What parts do you mind re-using?? The case and HDDs can be used. The HX520W should fine in theory although it is getting a bit old.

Re: Gaming PC _ can you spec me?

How much can you recycle from the old machine? Or are you planning to give it to someone else?

If you are going to recycle most of it, you might get away with a CPU, RAM, Mobo and GPU upgrade. Keep the case, PSU and drives which will free up maybe £200 of your budget.

    AMD build;
    FX8350 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-f...he-125w-retail
    Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600 CAS9 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb-(...9-9-24-xmp-15v
    Asus M5A97 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-...e-20-(x16)-atx
    Gigabyte 7950 Windforce http://www.scan.co.uk/products/3gb-g...-i-hdmi-mdp-pl

Total: £515 plus games in the GPU bundle which you can count towards future savings (because you didn't have to pay for them and they are AAA titles) or you can sell the codes off.

    Intel build:
    i5 3470 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/intel...e-32x-ratio-77
    Corsair Vengeance 1600 8GB CAS9 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb-(...9-9-24-xmp-15v
    MSI Z77A http://www.scan.co.uk/products/msi-z...d-sub-hdmi-atx
    Gigabyte 7950 Windforce http://www.scan.co.uk/products/3gb-g...-i-hdmi-mdp-pl

Total: £519 (similar caveat to the AMD build, keep or sell the games)

It's a tough call to make personally. The Intels run cool but the 1155 socket is doomed. AM3+ however will get at least another generation from what I understand and the 8350 is plenty fast for most people.

Sorry, yeah the HDDs and case and PSU could be kept, same with DVD drives etc...

I'd rather avoid buying end of generation equipment, just if I wanted an incremental upgrade a couple of years down the road...

Will look into your suggestions though, thanks

Those builds look pretty sick! I heard the 7950,when over clocked is a beast of a card too!

But why is the 1155 doomed? Actually I guess because Haswell has a new socket everything else will too :'(

Haswell and the GTX700 series will be out in June AFAIK.

    Do you overclock?

Re: Gaming PC _ can you spec me?

That is right Mehta, there is nothing for 1155 after this batch.

I made a correction to the Intel build, went to the i5 3470 instead of the Xeon 1220v2. I thought the 1220v2 had hyper threading but it does not. The 1230v2 does however but its an additional £20. If you do encoding or heavily threaded tasks, it really is worth it in the long run. Maybe drop the GPU budget or skip takeout tonight. Otherwise the i5 is adequate for gaming.

edit: Cat-the-fifth makes a good point. If you are not itching to build now, wait a little more and see what comes along. Haswell and the 7xx series aren't big leaps though. Expect performance jumps in the single digits or low 10s in each class but I expect nVidia's 700 launch cards are going to be pretty heavy hitters and will be priced accordingly.

This might be getting slightly off topic but how long do you reckon my i5 will last before needing an upgrade?

I am sorry Mehta, I can't see a system tab under your profile. Did you turn it off or not fill it in yet? For the most part, its quite dependent on the user to judge if a system gets too slow. Users can turn down game settings or perhaps its other parts like the GPU holding the system back.

Not in any hurry, would look to purchase in June anyway. Would those components be in my budget?

I wouldn't look to overlook tbh, tried it at university so may give it a go one day, but with bring so busy these days it's not something I'd 'buy into' at this stage.

    Thanks guys, very grateful

Re: Gaming PC _ can you spec me?

With haswell close it would be worth waiting, I'd be less worried about the nvidia 7xx series because the mid range cards don't come out until a few months afters.

Personally I'd look at a new graphics card now and see what happens on the cpu front.

I'd not greatly stress out over the socket change as intel keep doing it. 1156 and 1366 only lasted 1 generation, 1155 has only lasted 2 generations

I think it should be there?

Anyway I also agree that waiting for the new hardware to come out is a good idea. Even if you don't buy a 700 series card, I assume the 600 series will be a little bit cheaper too

Re: Gaming PC _ can you spec me?

Doesn't look like much has changed! I think Haswell will be redundant when DDR4 comes out. So its as much a dead end as 1155. It doesn't seem to be a huge performance leap.

How much are you planning on OC'ing? Non Ks will OC 400mhz over the rated speed. They then boost 200mhz per core for IB when 4 cores are used and 100mhz for SB. I would get a z77 chipset if going down the 1155 route to complement a k series cpu. I swapped my 2600k for a 3470 and some cash as I was never going to run it over 4ghz and hyper threading imo is pretty redundant with quick sync. It runs at 3.8 on 4 cores and 4.0 on two, the memory controller is better and quick sync runs faster. IGP performance is poor but its relative I suppose.

The problem is none of the non k cpus seem to be that cheap. Second hand prices are much better that is a bit of a PITA.

I carried over a 775 cooler. if you have push pins you should be able to fit it to a 1155 board.

I think the voucher codes are important as mentioned above as they can knock a sizable chunk of the price of a GPU. Given the chance I would aim for a HIS iceq 7950.

Re: Gaming PC _ can you spec me?

What is the point in DDR4?
I mean 'upgrading' from 1866mhz to 2400mhz results in like a 0.5% speed increase on typical tasks, why bother?

It makes sense if you have an APU, but otherwise..
