Overclocking and speedstep
Hi all,
Just looking for some advice on overclocking my i5 760. I have checked several guides and, from what I have read, speedstep is the feature which dynamically lowers the multiplier when the CPU doesn't need to be at full tilt. I'm only planning to take it up to about 3.6Ghz, nothing too extreme as I want a decent balance of speed and power consumption.
Most guides seem to advise that I should switch this off but ideally I would like it to stay on as I don't want the CPU to run at its full speed if I am just surfing the web or typing a word doc.
Can anyone give me a bit more of a background on this feature and whether its possible to keep it on/ safe speeds etc?
Thanks
P.S. if anyone has a particularly good guide they would recommend then feel free to let me know :)
Re: Overclocking and speedstep
I haven't used your setup but have never turned off the power saving features when overclocking; I can't really see the point.
Legionhardware had an okay looking one but tbh I would just browse a few and stick with one that makes sense to you.
Hows the tanking btw? Always up for a toon.
Re: Overclocking and speedstep
I would leave speed step on, turned it off by mistake and found my temps to sit close to 50 deg rather than the 29- 30s when just browsing etc. It will spin up accordingly, even on websites just to render an image. Just remember to set your overclock by all cores and not each core.
Re: Overclocking and speedstep
If you're running on the edge of stability, then things that cause frequencies and voltages etc. to fluctuate might be a problem, hence the guides recommendations. If you're overclocking for actual use rather than high score tables then you can leave it on.

Hi Domestic,
Haven't been playing much but just getting back to WoT now that Uni has finished for the summer. Just grinding the french arty line in preparation for the new update. Hows things with you? I'm usually up for a toon whenever I'm on. Are you still with MUMMY? I haven't bothered with CW in a while, was actually thinking of going back to KIA just for the fact that they have guys that play other games. I tend to need regular breaks from WoT...
@Technodean and Kaniel, thanks for the advice, I was hoping to leave it on so that's helpful.
Re: Overclocking and speedstep
If your using a better aftermarket cooler I would disable speedstep and have the CPU OC'ed to the speed your looking to run it at.
I used to have speedstep enabled on my 2500K which depending on which profile I used ran between 4.5 GHz and 5 GHz and you could feel a bump in the performance with a slight stutter in windows when it dropped down to 1.6 GHz so in the end I disabled it :)

Unfortunately the MMY experiment ended a while ago. I've ended up in PTS which is really good but stressful. Unless you know loads of people in KIA still; OMNI is probably looking for people; a fair few from when I was there. E100 special this weekend; one of the 7 tier 10s I need to buy :/
Re: Overclocking and speedstep
Yeah I joined AX but due to RL commitments stopped playing clan wars right around the same time. Haven't really paid much attention to it and probably should have left AX ages ago, just never got round to it.
Can't really be bothered with CW anymore. Too much faffing around.
I didn't know about the E100 special. I probably shouldn't have sold mine ages ago! Got too many tanks researched and nowhere near enough credits for any of them
Think the T62A will be next on my list...
