Can I get rid of .....

I hate the page file! And I'm shure some of you do as well! After all, why would I want a page file when I have a gig of ram! So I am wondering if I can get rid of it? Or at least work around it!

So far I came up with the idea of useing a memory disk... ( a space on the ram that acts like a hard drive ) I have created one and am going to move the page file to it! wish me luck!

    Umm,

I'm no expert on this, and please don't quote me, but I think having the page file on a virtual disk in memory is completely pointless.

The page file is basically used for virtual memory, and if Windows does it's job properly (which despite what we all say about M$, it probably does) the page file will only improve performance by freeing up system ram. If you've got shed loads of ram, Windows uses the page file less often and differently, but if I remember correctly it is still important.

I think basically the consequences of actually running out of Ram if you don't have a page file is pretty dire, like suddenly wading through a swamp wearing leaky wellies. It's slow, unpleasant and you'll probably get completely stuck in the stink.

Why don't you like it anyway?

Edit, just looked at your sig, 512 megs of ram is plenty but by no means loads. Windows is pretty good at managing memory but excellent at using it up, and it expects a page file.
They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.

Set your page file to a fixed minimum of 2.5x your ram, either on your boot drive or another drive (with a gig of ram like me it never gets used so doesnt matter...) and just forget about it.

Having the pf in ram is comealtly pointless and defeates the point in having it in the first place!

However there was acctually a device, for the pci slot, which accepts pc133 SDR mem and allows you to use several sticks as permenant storage and constantly powered. That would be great for perfomance, a PCI express version, running ddr500 low latency mem, the fastest storage you could ever have, everything would load quite instantly...
However I dont think storage is much of a bottleneck for current pc's, ones with lots of ram anyway. There are other things to be improved first

But im suprised no companys have created a DDR based mem storage device yet for servers as they could REALLY bennifit from it.

Ahem...errrr... Solid state disks are readily available (great for database servers) but if you have to ask the price...

yep, i really don't think i need a 5GB pagefile... and someone who uses ie would need the same size pagefile as someone who uses photoshop with 1gb pics?

these days it all depends what you do - use your PC for a few hours, just do what you regularly do, leave stuff open, then see how much pagefile you actually use. Then give yourself and extra bit, and set it fixed. Well, thats how I work anyway.
