    System Dead....again

Help, Im now at the end of my tether and sanity,

End of last week I was surfing the net when all of a sudden the comp turns off. Never got a POST after that. Seemed like a mobo to me, so RMA sent. Need a working PC so had to order a new mobo and got a 64 AMD and a MSI K8N.

Setup all the system as it arrived today, and as soon as I turned it on there was a cloud of smoke, but it was still running. Seemed like a fan wire blown, so took the mobo out of the case and tried again, power but no POST.The bottom of the mobo has what looks like a blown transistor.Took all the parts out and reseated and only after I took the RAM out and reseated did the comp only power for 2secs then turn off.

Im lost, am I just unlucky to have had a bad mobo again, or is something else at play here? RAM, PSU, dodgy mains?

Help Im getting seriously tired of it all now,

Sounds very much like you have an evil PSU to me.
The first instance when the comp blinked straight off is always an indication of a PSU issue.

I'm not a massive expert but it sound to me like something todo with power supply (mains or unit)
You do use a surge protector right?

Yes running two SP so cant think of it being a mains issue, So that going to be a PSU and a mobo RMA, what are the chances of the rest being dead?

Might just sell everything and go SFF.

I've seen dead PSU's, but I've never seen them overjuice - especially if you've got SPs in place. Would've thought the fuse in the PSU and/or mobo would blow first.

Check all the PSU wiring for cuts/splits, bad connections. Also, make sure your not shorting out somewhere else in your system - i.e. a.n. other bad piece of wiring or the mobo pressing up against the metal of the case.

Still, if it's a cheap/nasty PSU, go and buy a decent one (Antec, Enermax, etc.)
