Which UPS?

I've got an old (10 years!) UPS that I use for my Server, its basically an ATOM doing a bit more than NAS.

It's on the blink.

What's a good compact UPS that gives about 5 mins of power for 5 HDDs + Atom board? Would be interested if anyone knows of any 12v ones, as the system runs of a 12v DC source

Would it be rude to say a car battery?

I had a friend who ran a low powered server from a car battery, and charged the battery with a solar panel. Could do the same idea with a mains charger?

Thats pretty much what a UPS is my APC one can hook up extra batteries - though you probably want more of a deep cycle leisure battery from a caravan

I'll be honest, was wanting something quick and lazy! Not got time to roll my own right now, plus this been my local backup server for my home PCs I'd sooner have something a bit more trustworthy!

Cheap UPS' are not worth even thinking about.

Buy something with user serviceable batteries and you are good to go for years.

I have an APC 1000 UPS that I have been using for about 6 years. Pretty dependable. Definitely shouldn't go cheap.

depends entirely on your power requirements really! is it a server with a million core cpu its going to need more than a single core always idle machine
