Will a generic battery work with a Asus laptop?

I bought an Amstron replacement battery for my Asus Q500 and it takes 2 days to charge. Is this typical of new laptop batteries? Do off-brand batteries not work well with Asuss? What should I do?

Windows battery calibration might be out. After the 2 days charge let it completely drain to flat, let it auto-shutdown, and then charge again.

Quality of compatible batteries can vary quite considerably, so it's hard to say without knowing the specs of the cells used in both batteries. What do you mean by not charging, is it staying at 95% for ages, for example? Also, does the battery itself get warm during charging?
