just a quick note, i just bought myself an NEC 3500 (beige... oh the joy...) and put it in and it burns straight away... did 760mb onto a 52x cdr, burnt at 48x (2min54)

didnt need to firmware update or driver install or anything (XP SP2)... maybe try latest version of nero and sp2?
