Exclamation How to make HDD quieter....

I have just brought a Maxtor drive to replace my old seagate drive. But when I started using this new drive, it sometimes makes a noise when I open a program etc. I'm sure you know what I mean - it's hard to decribe. I only know it as a "hard drive noise".

Is there anyway to make it quieter, or stop it completely?

I couldn't hear my old drive at all

There isn't really an easy way, some alternatives are found here ... however they aren't particularly cheap.

Unfortunately the simplest one is to buy a quiet drive, samsung spinpoint are amongst the quietest I've come across.
Hard drives are by far the noisiest thing in my pc atm, but thats my own fault for running SCSI

Could the noise just decrease with time? I heard that a noise from some PSU fan decreased after a while - could the same happen here?

There are bushings that in time can wear, also there are bearings that can get louder in time...

If I bought a HDD nowadays that was at all 'loud' or 'noisey' I would assume it is defective in some way. I havn't recently come across a IDE or SATA drive that is loud at all.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

Good - at least there's hope. I will be looking on the net for a way to do this in the evening. It's too late (or early!) now....
