    S939 Shuttle's (And Shuttle-Alikes)

I'm after a S939 SFF, and although the SN95G5 fits my criteria, they only appear to do it in black it appears. Vain, I know.

Anyway, are there any more S939 SFF's out now, or on their way before xmas? Or a shuttle planning on releasing different versions based on the SN95G5?

    Cheers

Did anyone see the article today on the inquirer which said that Nforce 4 could be launched as soon as Monday? If so hopefully there's a good chance that Shuttle will produce a new system in time for the New Year.

You won't see an nforce 4 Shuttle till after christmas. I would go with the SN95G5, man that baby is sweet.

Anyone want to guess whether the nForce4 will be in the P or G5 Chassis?

I'd wait for the NF4 if I was building a new system (in fact, I am doing that), otherwise you're only going to have the expense of a bunch more upgrades when you decide you really would like pci-express, soundstorm2 audio etc,

MAS's current system is more than enough to handle most things until NF4 arrives, and it is only a few months off

Yeah that's what I'm doing Stoo, waiting for NF4. Like you say, there's too many upgrades otherwise. Best to wait for most of the major changes to be implemented before spending all that cash. I hope they hurry tho....I cant wait for a new baby

The SN95G5 is really nice, but long-term I don't think it's a very wise buy. Especially given how much it costs

Btw, while I'm here....I've heard (may well be wrong) that if you're using a PCI-E gfx card, you have to use DDR2 RAM? Is that right? So far the upgrades that I'm prepared for when moving to NF4 are SATA, PCI-E, and A64....so should I be budgeting for some new RAM as well? If so I hope things change, DDR2 still seems hideously expensive at the moment.

Dammit, you've found a hole in my knowledge!

Edit: found it.. nope, doesn't look like nforce4 will be bothering with DDR2 at the moment

nF 4 is not worth waiting for! All it has to offer over the current nForce3 ultra is PCI express support, and we all know that this is a crock. 8X AGP is perfectly adequate and still has years left before it will exceed its bandwidth limitations.

Despite the fact most of the industry is moving over to pci-express, and that pci-express has tangible performance increases over AGP (no bottleneck for one)..

Also the return of soundstorm audio, SATA-2, etc etc..

No, not worth waiting for at all..

Since the Athlon64 has an integrated Memory controller, nothing nvidia can do can enable ddr2 support. DDR2 gains next to nothing right now, and AMD figured they would let Intel pay the early adoption cost, and would launch their own DDR2 based Athlon64s once there is both A) a performance benefit and B) not a huge cost penalty. When ddr2 athlon 64s do come out, an mboard upgrade will be necessary, but I don't imagine it will require a massive chip redesign, since all the "memory" controls are integrated into the chip.

For intel platforms, its true that upgrading to pciX requires DDR2, but this is only because the two technologies are artificially tied together, not because they are required for each other.

Oh, and the sn95g5 rules. I've had one running on my desk for a few weeks now, and its the pinacle of "hotness"

AGP is nowhere near a bottleneck at the moment - the cards can't use the available bandwidth as it is.

I don't think that you will see SoundStorm return just yet but we will see.

Drives can't hit anywhere near 150mb/s as it is so again the extra theoretical bandwidth brings no benefits.
