Last I heard you had to buy a Windows 10 pro key and do some sort of downgrade?

They don't make it easy to get new keys for a dead platform.

Windows 10 don't need key to work properly, but you can't change the wallpaper or similar things. There is no countdown to "you can't run the system until buy key".

To have downgrade rights you must buy Windows 10 Professional obtained through a commercial licensing agreement, or with Software Assurance (which you buy through the commercial license agreement), or with certain OEM products (you should check the agreement details with the OEM that you purchase your machine through to confirm downgrade rights and procedure). They are *not* available through a Fully Packaged Product (ie if you were to buy a copy of Win 10 Pro retail off the shelf)

    More details at https://download.microsoft.com/downl...ade_rights.pdf

(If you're considering buying an OEM license from somewhere like Scan in order to apply to a self-built machine then you should be aware that you would be the OEM, and as such you would need to have an agreement with Microsoft in order to be able to invoke the downgrade rights).

It's not what you wanted to hear, but I hope it helps.

Also worth considering that you'd be paying for software that goes out of support in just over a year. If you're determined to avoid Win10 and don't want to go the Linux route you'd probably be best off licensing Windows 8.1 and installing Start8 or similar if the start screen offends you.
