All In One Printer

I'm going to be buying an all-in-one printer in the next few weeks. I checked my email, and ebuyer have one for £39.99. It's called a Lexmark X1150.

I'm really sorry to keep asking you guys stuff like this, but I know nothing about printers, so I'd like to know if this one is any good. I'm looking for an all-in-one printer (perferably black) between 40 and 70 pounds. It'll probably be mainly used for printing black and white text for uni work, but will do colour too.

I don't know if printer/scanner/copiers do this, but do they all need the computer to be on for them to copy stuff?

Basically, is the one I found any good, and if not, does anyone know of a better one for my uses?

A friend has one,he swears by their print quality but says the ink costs can be a little sore on the wallet.

that seems to be the case with most printers these days tho. depends on how much printnign you're going to do, if you're doing a lot it may be worth factoring in the price of ink cartridges into your choice, if you're not going to do loads then the cheaper the printer the better

i recently got a few dell A920's from bigpockets when they were going cheap & sold them on, these are just rebadged lexmark X1150s & the print quality on these was excellent so its a decent enough printer

NB - just in case if you want to use it a lot as a copier you have to have the PC switched on to do so, so it doesn't operate as a standalone copier. that was the only thing i found that wasn't ideal

Lexmark are generally regarded as poor build quality and unreliable.

Personally i would steer cleer.

And your friend needs to bear in mind that the initial purchase cost of a printer pales into insignificance when you consider the total cost of running it over 3 years (buying cartridges). If he is gonna print alot, then you have to wonder if it is worth pumping a few hundred quid (3 years of print cartridges) into a poor cheap printer or would it be better to pump that money into a good quality, reliable printer.

I only buy HP and most of their models ranging from old-new are very reliable in my experience.

I'm currently considerring an all in one myself and have been reading several reviews on different ones.
I almost bought the dell 920 the other day (£55inc on dell this weekend - see bargain hunt) but decided against it as replacement ink is expensive.
Currently I am toying with getting the Cannon MP360 - looks decent, I have a friend who has one and "compatible" ink carts are £2 each, so much cheaper in the long run than the lexmark/dell (if you do a fair bit of printing)

I am VERY impressed by that cannon above. Here's a quote from one of the reviews:

"Best of all just purchased 2 BLK. & 2 COL. cartridges inc. vat & postage for under £10."

The ink seem very cheap, so although the printer was more than what I intended to spend, that should balence out the costs.

I'm pretty certain now that this is the one I'll be getting (unless there's a similar one, but cheaper), but I have a few questions:

1. Does it come with a USB cable included?
2. Will having USB2.0 make a big difference?
3. Can you copy without the PC being on?

P.S. - I'm REALLY shocked at the price of the ink. My parents printer (HP deskjet 895Cxi) uses ink that costs about £20!

I own a HP-PSC 1205, and it's very impressive. A large black ink cartridge for it from eBuyer is £11.46, a large colour cartridge is £19.23 and a small colour cartridge is around £13. It can also copy standalone in black and colour and you can choose the quality (photo or normal paper) and size of the output (100% or fit to page). I think it cost me £70 when I bought it and it's well worth a look. There are some lower models which have a smaller profile and a slightly cheaper build quality which cost about £20 less.

After reading a few reviews, I've seen that some printers have 3 separate colours, not just one colour cartridge. Does anyone know of a printer similar to the MP360 that has 3 separate colours cartridges? I just don't see the point in getting more ink if only the red has gone .

If you wanted to replace all 3 it'll work out more expensive then just replacing the one cartridge.
