    Video editing/ processing

Just started doing some video editing/divx conversion stuff and am wondering what is the speed difference between a athalon xp and P4 for this kind of stuff? I have a heavily overclocked xp 2500+m at 2405mhz. Would a standard p4 be faster by a lot or a little bit, as if so i may get one and have an image processing/server/download box.

well, mine cuts threw vids like a hot knife threw butter! But it takes more then a good P4 to handel vids.. you'll need a gig of fast ram some realy fast storage... ect... So you'll need alot of cash first!

It depends how much you're doing, I changed from a Barton @ 2.4 to my current PIV earlier this year to speed up encoding, but thats the only thing it really helps speed up.
As Myth said for alot of stuff drive speed/access is important, editing especially, so you would have to do quite alot to make it worth while having a box just for that ..... something along the lines of the one in my sig works great for movie editing/encoding etc

    Currently wanted:
    DVB- satellite pci card

Yes it will, with SSE2 or an conversion program that handles HT, vary from a little bit to a fair bit quicker.

He only asked if it would speed up conversion/encoding, and therefore I would say no, you don't need a Gb of RAM and a superfast HDD.

This is why he would need a nice gig and fast storage...

I disagree. 512Mb would be fine coupled with an 8Mb cache ATA-100 HDD.

I presume he means video processing and not image processing, but you may be right however.
