    Ide Raid 5?

    Is it possible to get an ide pci raid card that can do raid 5?
    I doubt it, but am kinda upset atm as one of my 200Gig drives has just died on me (WD Caviar SE PATA - I don't use SATA) yes it was full and only half was backed up
    I've known I needed some kind of parity for a while as my worst night has now happened, the lesson has now been learnt .... parity.
    I'd rather not mirror as there isn't alot of space left in my pc atm, apart from not wanting to fork out for another 2 200Gig drives ....... suggestions/help please.

    Yes I know backing up more regularly would be a sensible option

    There are a few cards that can do raid5 i've got a Highpoint RR454 which supports Raid 0,1,5,0+1 and JBOD.
    It aint exactly cheap though, found that scan are about the only people that do them.

    the older rocketraids will support it but I found mine needed a bios flash to do so. ( think it was the 404 )

    I found it was very slow to build/rebuild the array though

    i would personally recommend the 3 ware range of cards, expensive but worth it. your other option is the adaptec cards. Would steer clear of the other brands when it comes to raid 5

    highpoint seem best for software raid, adaptec & 3ware's high end kit is in another league (and price bracket)

    My SATA RAID 5 card is made by Promise. They will have an IDE equivalent for it... dunno if Scan sell it though.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Cheers guys - the Highpoint seems a bit overpriced for what is basically software raid (£70), as for the others, I can't seem to find anywhere for sale in the UK .....

    The Promise SX4000 looks likely to be the cheapest option from others, I've it seen for sale on a US site for $100 ... but am still looking for a UK retailer
