A very thin layer. If you are going to use AS5, then they have a guide on their website on how to apply the stuff. However thinly but evenly, perhaps using a credit card type thing to make it thin and even.

for the A64 heat spreader mate, put a small bit (grain of rice size) in the middle of the heat spreader and place the hsf on top and let it spread it out itself
the whole spreader doesnt need to be covered, as the core is much smaller than the spreader
