Well bad sectors aren't good (yeah, I know how that reads!) anything important on it yet?

Nah, I've actually had it for ages. Even while web browsing the computer hangs and programs go into not-responding mode briefly - safe to say that the HD is the problem?

    Re: Hard drive failing?

    HD might be a problem.

You have one pending sector. It is pending reallocation, so if you can get the machine to write to that sector it might fix the drive.

You don't have any reallocated sectors, so the drive looks largely OK.

Certainly looks like a bad HDD. You could download Process Explorer and see if it can tell you the stuck process when the computer hangs/pauses. Most like Hardware Interrupts (that is a driver which didn't get a response).

But the best diagnostics is using a spare drive if you've got one.

    Re: Hard drive failing?

I can't install graphics drivers on the laptop (lenovo G770) on windows 8 so the switchable graphics doesn't really work - I don't think that's the problem though since lots of people have the graphics problem I have but I haven't heard anyone report that their laptop freezes like mine.

    Re: Hard drive failing?

Just to clarify my earlier comment, it does sound like your hard drive is causing the PC to hang, so in that respect your hard drive is a problem, but it might be recoverable.

A surface scan will probably get the drive happy and usable, but that is best done with the manufacturer's diagnostics which is usually destructive.

    Re: Hard drive failing?

screw it, it was an RMA that they clearly didn't fix properly. Pretty unnacceptable but I get the impression that a lot of RMA "fixes" are just tighten some screws and hope it lasts 6 months til they can't bother you any more. Best to be done with it and buy a new one I figure

    Re: Hard drive failing?

So I'm running HD tune to see what happens - this drive does not want to be found out. It goes unresponsive every few seconds and it's taking absolutely ages. Once in a while it will update (come out of not responding) and show me that it's progressed a tiny bit. If I have to completely reinstall windows I'll just buy an SSD/SSHD as I quite want one anyway - is it 100% sure that will fix the problem? it's 2 years old and pretty slow so not exactly dead set on keeping it

    Re: Hard drive failing?

Consumer drives have a massive timeout trying to recover data from damaged sectors (one reason they are not recommended in a proper raid array). During this timeout before it gives up, the machine will just sit there. I think that is what is happening.

Check your logs in the Windows event viewer, there should be clues there to say whether my hunch is right or not that this is what it hitting your machine.
