Buying a refurbished cpu water cooler

I was thinking about buying a refurbished H80 for my 3570k, I have very little money atm but I really want to overclock my 3570k i5 to try and squeeze 60fps in Planetside 2, but my current fan isn't up to the task. I saw a refurbished one for £40, but wondered if anyone else had done the same? Would it be a risk to my components? Also not really that in touch with water cooling.

All in one water coolers are pretty safe.
Me got experience with new ones.
If you are worried, try to Google refurbished water coolers and review s of them.

You are welcome and good luck.

Personally I think there will be eventually nothing you have to worry about. Retailers and manufacturers refurbish only products they have cosmetic marks at most.
Most you will have to deal with the issues the new units share as well.

Cheers, and yeh, only thing putting me off is a few reviews on the noise of the h80, think it is an older model and less quiet then the newer and continued h80i.

Wonder if the noise of the pump could be offset by a custom layer of sound dampening material/foam.
You know, just a simple layer aesthetically mounted over the CPU block/pump.
And the FANs always can be regulated/replaced.

Maybe, I saw one review where he used quieter custom fans and it made a little difference.

I've bought refurbished h100 and it comes with 1 year warranty and I've read that in many cases if it leaks and damage your gear corsair will replace it. Oh and it works fine

Not much you can do to "refurbish" a closed loop water cooler since they are completely sealed. The pumps do degrade, get slower and get louder eventually, not much you can do about it. Unlike a proper watercooling system.

Recieved it, oddly enough it is shrink wrapped like new. Looks new on the inside too can't tell visually anyway. Didn't have time to install it, but will give it a go tommorow.

I really hope it doesn't leak, would ruin my... year!

Wonder if you would have the MoBo upside down thus any leaking water would immediately travel downward and away from the MoBo, if it would help in a case of actual leakage.

Well you can run it for 24h outside the case first. Usually if it doesn't show any signs of leakage it should not leak in future.

Re: Buying a refurbished cpu water cooler

The refurbished unit is as good as most normal units and thorough companies will put them through stress testing to ensure they work as intended.

I'd always try and get one with a years warranty at least, or make sure the house insurance covers accidental damage. £40 may be a bargain but you still need to be prepared in case things go wet. But that's the risk everyone faces, new or not.

Corsair H80's tend to have a good reputation for product longevity anyway so i'd say it was worth the risk personally.

Lets hope we both get reliable units. I've just ordered the H100 refurbished for my first adventure into water cooling so I'm a bit nervous too.

    You should be all right.
If you like, you can give it a demo run outside of the case.
