Shuttle ST20G5 Windows 7 SATA driver working

    Hi,
just to let all Shuttle ST20G5 users out there that you can install Windows 7. It has taken me a few weeks to find a working driver. I even tried extracting one from Vista 64 which worked on one of my ST20G5s but not on the other!

As I haven't made a minimum 5 posts before I can insert a link in a thread then reconstruct this: paulmcgrath dot net
You'll find the driver in the downloads.

It contains a Vista 32 and 64 driver which I have working in Windows 7 64bit (I am online on it now).

With a X2 4200, 1.5GB ram and a NVidia Geforce 9400 GT my performance rating is a respectible 4.5 out of 7.9. My ram let me down! It is just DDR 333.
    Good luck
    Paul

Re: Shuttle ST20G5 Windows 7 SATA driver working

There are other ST20G5 users out there?!? I thought I was the only one left...

Thanks for your work Paul, I'll be testing a Windows 7 install on my trusty old silver box at the weekend. Are there any other driver/incompatability issues I should be aware of?

BTW I tried to send you a message on your website but it kept saying "There was a problem sending your message."

    Cheers,
    Sam

Re: Shuttle ST20G5 Windows 7 SATA driver working

Right, got windows 7 ultimate installed on the ST20g5.
The SATA driver worked a treat, thanks again.
However the sound isn't quite right. After installing the latest driver from Realtek the sound is choppy and full of artifacts. Any ideas?

Also, the audio you can hear sounds terrible! Really compressed and tinny... It's not my headphones.

I did have a problem with one of the realtek 64bit sound drivers but I cannot remember the version, try the previous release and it might be okay.

Re: Shuttle ST20G5 Windows 7 SATA driver working

The 'windows update' driver doesn't work at all. The latest Vista/Win7 R2.36 driver on the rather dubious Realtek website does work but the sound is clipped and choppy.
It seems to be a very common problem across various sound cards and for me was cured by changing the power management option to 'performance'.

Re: Shuttle ST20G5 Windows 7 SATA driver working

I am having the typical problem that it locks up during the install process and reboots to just start it all over again.

I think maybe it might be my SATA DVD drive causing the issue since others are successful, is anyone else using a SATA DVD to install as well as SATA HD?

    this could be fun then.

i have found this driver on the nvidia website

    http://www.nvidia.com/page/uli_drivers.html

apparently extracting that gives you the raid driver to install on a s-ata hard disk

Unfortunately that's one of the drivers I have tried. I gave up a while back bought an Asus laptop. I do still have the sff though just sitting idle since Oct. Might be because my DVD writer is sata. Maybe one if these days if I have an opportunity ill try again using a USB DVD writer to install. I had removed every other possible piece of hardware and others appear to have had success with this sff case.

Thanks for giving it a go.

I started with this driver and it didn't work. It has a Vista 32/64 driver but not Windows 7. If you look in the inf file you'll find that it might be 6.3.0.0 (can't remember exact revision number). The one that I found hunting the net was 2 versions later. There seem to be different motherboard versions of the ST20G5, we have loads of different ones in work, and I couldnt get the Nvidia ULi driver to work on every one. The driver on my site works on all the ones I have tried so far in work.

The Realtek sound issue was resolved for me by going for an earlier version of the 64 bit driver. I have since tried the latest 64bit driver and that worked as well.

Re: Shuttle ST20G5 Windows 7 SATA driver working

Anyone know how big of a hard drive the bios will detect?
I tried plugging in a 1.5 TB samsung drive and the latest bios doesn't detect it.

I have fitted a 1TB in a ST20G5. I dont know if there is an upper size limit.

It may not be the BIOS that has a size limit but that the drive is of a newer type that is not supported by the bios.

I'm having trouble getting any graphics cards to work! I keep getting resource conflicts that I can't resolve, has anybody else had similar problems?

I've never seen that problem. I have both a GeForce 7600GT and a ATI Radeon HD 4670 that both worked beautifully under XP 32bit. I am currently using the onboard video though, trying to turn it into a backup box (meager with 2x320G), so the fan noise from the video has to go.

Funny thing about this coming through today is I was trying to turn this box into a restore backup box TODAY. Search for the RESTORE project on sourceforge, I can't post any URL. It's based on Ubuntu, and it doesn't play nice with the RAID controller though, so I am installing XP right now as I type this, and I'll RAID 1 that and try to find some good XP cross-platform backup software.

I think at the end of the day I'm going to end up getting a Synology DS210j two 1TB drives:

Not sure what to tell you, what kind of video card is it?

Re: Shuttle ST20G5 Windows 7 SATA driver working

I also had an ATi HD4650 and a Geforce 7300GT work in mine without problems.

Sorry I can't be of any help.

I wonder if it is just a power issue. Have you tried unplugging some devices such as the CD drive or floppy drive and remove any PCI card. If you can get a PSU tester to make sure your PSU is working properly.

Re: Shuttle ST20G5 Windows 7 SATA driver working

I've solved the problem!!! All I needed to do was update the bios! As simple as that, problem solved immediatly. So anybody trying to install Windows 7 on a shuttle st20g5 should do a bios update first
