Is this a normal sort of speed for my Maxtor ATA133 8MB cache, 7200RPM, etc, hdd? It seems a little low
It's the Nvidia driver test thingy![]()

I'd say that's about right, Howard. Without looking at Raptors or SCSI drives, current harddrives top out at around 55-65MB/s.

That's fine as a sustained, you will only hit near a theroetical limit on burst reads
if the cache/controller is upto dumping that qty of data in a burst.
You probably have an IDE66 cable so you just need an IDE133 cableOriginally Posted by Russ
Think thats what was meant

I did click the link but didn't see the bit about SATA![]()

Russ - to venture a guess, try updating your SATA controller's drivers. Alternatively, given that it is SATA, it could be that the program is incorrectly detecting the DMA mode. With a drive bandwidth program like HD Tach or the one Howard was using, see what your burst speed tops out at - if it's more than 66MB/s, I'd say it's a safe bet that the DMA mode is indeed being reported incorrectly.
Cheers eldren, i'll check it then check the drivers![]()

Where might I find this Nvidia test utility?
Its under the nforce ide controller driver properties in device manager, you'll need to have a motherboard with the nforce2 chipset though.
