No you don't need ECC RAM.
See http://www.msi.com.tw/program/produc...il.php?UID=528
Just make sure that you put an OS on there that will actually use 3GB, i don't think XP Home or Professional or Win2k Pro use more than 2GB even if you have more...
TiG
Apparently Abaqus people recommended 3gb for xp pro and 2 for win2k. So they are going for 3 gb.
Thanks everyone.
As TiG said I'm pretty sure XP/2k only support 2GB of Ram
Seeing as its bought specifically to run Abaqus its easier to get 3gb and blame them if its not used. Its still within the budget anyway.
Unless the pc is going to be used for processing vital sensitive data, you don't need ECC RAM.
Thats what i thought. Its just that so many of 1gb modules were ECC i was wondering if they needed to be for big modules.
By the way. Savastore is a bit of a pain to use. And they have a huge selection of things(and by things i mean memory modules - 25 pages that i saw and thats not all), most of which are out of stock, and look like they never will be back. Sorry about the rant.
Try Crucial for memory if you can mate- they're usually as cheap as anybody, free delivery, great customer support
Its an order which has to go through university order process. While crucial is an approved supplier it is still easier to just get it all from one place to save on faffing about with different orders. Plus minor differences in price don't bother uni that much. And it still came out about 300 quid under the maximum budget, although the cheaper the better obviously.
