    CPU Limit?

Fitted my IC7 MAX 3 mobo and 3.4GHz Northwood and tryed a bit of overclocking, Ive got the chip to just onder 3.8GHz with 1.7v
Cant get windows to boot at anything higher regardless of the voltage.
Have I hit the limit of the chip or am I missing something?

Sounds reasonable on air TBH....depends on your cooling. Don't go above 1.7V unless you want the chip to get SNDS.

every chip is different ;/ but it might not be your chip thats at fault....could be your mobo, or memory. a 400mhz overclock isnt bad tho, even on water.

reminds me i really should push mine more, its sitting at 25 degreesC with a 400mhz overclock..rekon i can take it higher.

    but anyway...what temps you getting?

It could be either the mobo or ram thats holding you back.
I don't know about the IC7, but I know quite alot of springdale/canterwood boards suffer from vcore droop, so it could be voltage fluctuations.

Which reminds me, I've got to do the droop mod on mine at some point and push this chip a bit more

I have that mobo! I also have a 800MHz OC... Try seting your ram to 3:4 or whatever so the ram isnt being OC'ed! That way you can eliminate the ram as a factor... Next, the voltage should never be at 1.7! 1.6 is considered safe... And third It could be your power suply...

I got both the mobo and chip from the guy so I know its not the mobo, I have tryed 3:4 and that doesnt help.
I have also run PIV chips at over 1.7v before for extendedd periods of time with no issues.

Which drivers? What GPU/mem speeds. Oh, and what card? EDIT: saw your sig., but that doesn't make things any clearer! :-)

My P4 is a 3.2, midly overclocked to 3.6. Pulls just over 5300 in 3DMark05 at 421/1.13. Tweeking would take it higher, but it's pointless. Card is a 6800GT (PNY).

Why bother busting a gut just to get an extra 100MHz or so out of the processor? You'll never notice it anyhow. Stick with 3.6 and a nice stable system. Mines on very quiet air cooling (Zalman cu7000) and has been left on nearly every day 24x7 for the last 6 months. Never missed a beat.

1Gb Kingston Hyperx PC4000, XFX 6800 GT 560 Watt PSU, gets 4700 in 3dmark 05 with vid card at 400 and mem at 1.4GHz.
Why bother with the extra 100MHz? because it will do that extra 100MHz and I want to know why I cant get it.
