    Legitimate use fro Port Forwarding

    Ahoy hoy

To cut a long story short, my ISP have disabled port forwarding, and to use any filesharing networks i belive you have to have it enabled.

So i need to try to convince my ISP, which i cant change, to do this

Does anyone know of a Legitimate use i can tell them i need it for which is better then i need to download stuff

    Thanks

    Dave

Well its my internet acces in my halls of residence, and on all the documentation they gave me it says they dont monitor you or block acces to file sharing network, and technically they dont, as you can still use them but only at very slow speeds, so if i kicked up a fuss you nenver know.

And if i could say i need to to access XXXXXXXXXXX but i cant it may help my case

all i need is one port with it enabled

change the port in the filesharing client to one that is open - like the ftp port, or even the alternative http port 8080 or 1080 - www.emule-project.net is a client that will let you change your port to anything you like and only requires you to find 2 ports one for TCP and one for UDP. failing that get a proxy server like FreeProxy and you should be able to use your http port without problems.

Your isp can't disable port forwarding, it doesn't work like that.

They either send you information on that port or block specific ports, once they get to your router, its your router that either forwards them on or blocks them (depending on nat rules).

he means that they are not allowing communication on certain port numbers, not 'fowarding' as in the LAN kind of way. Altho i would check your routing settings incase it is your end. How did you find out that your ISP blocks some ports? their website, word of mouth, the fact it dont work and you have a feeling?

In that case just change the port that the p2p (I am assuming you want to use p2p program) uses.

If you got busted using file sharing apps in halls of residence you'd get disconnected from the network. It's against the terms and conditions of being able to have that net connection. You're in the same boat as me and NOTHING can be done about it unless you connect via a different ISP which isn't possible if you're in halls if i remember correctly.
