    RAID question

I'm running a hardware based raid5 setup (intel SRCU31A pci controller).
I am contemplating upgrading my raid controller (to a dual channel one) and was wondering if it is possible to change controllers and keep the raid drives as they are or would the data have to be backed up and then restored after a new array was built with the new controller?

Does that make sense to anyone?

I'm pretty sure that you can't transfer raid arrays from one controller to another, you'd need to backup the data and then restore it when the new array has been created.

Depends on what you upgrade to. Another Intel controller? Maybe it'll just pick up the array no problem.

In any case, have a full backup of all the data on the array before performing the upgrade.

In general it's best to re-partition and format the drives when changing controllers or computers.

Kinda what I expected, thx for the replies.

    Question #2:
Can anyone reccomend a decent (but not too expensive if possible) ata RAID5 controller? hardware pref, but that probably removes the "not too expensive" bit
The only pata one I've come across so far (that isn't megabucks) is the "Promise SX4000" which is hardware assisted, does anyone have any experience or know anything about these, from what I've come across they seem ok, and retail @ £120 without RAM.

The other alternative is SATA and tbh I haven't really looked at these in much depth, as I've been trying to find pata, so advice/suggestions appreciated,

    cheers

I have the SATA Version of the SX4000 (SX4 S150).

It's a great card for what I want. It's easy to work with, the only problem is the PCI bus reducing the amount of bandwidth I get.

Cheers mate - I know what you mean, my pci bus is getting hammerred already with the scsi controller - so adding another its gonna get killed. Maybe I should look at getting a cheapo fileserver and putting one in there instead of my main pc.

Where did you get yours from Kez? the only place I can find the sx4000 is span
