    Question Testing a new build

I have just finished building my second PC and have managed to do it all too easily! Especially compared to the many problems I had after the first attempt.

I now want to basically stress test it, to make sure things are ok. Is there any good software out there that people would recommend to do this?

Prime95 "torture test" is the best way to test stability imo

If you're planning to play games on it (and you own the game,) load up Unreal Tournament 2004 and play that for a bit. 'Tis a pretty good thing to check stability, but run Memtest and Prime95 aswell

Prime95 is the main thing I use, although I sometimes use 3DMark as well.

I think the best way to test overall stability is 3DMark2001. It stresses the entire system, not just memory, CPU or GPU. Loop it and turn off the screens between tests so that you are running 3D constantly. Run the 7 game tests 20 times each. That should do it. If you can do that it's stable.

Since videocard drivers are responsible 85% of the time for stability issues (my statistics based on over 1000 repaired systems) you should always test for stability with something that includes a video component.

If you're going to do the tests, do them properly, e.g. leave memtest-86 running for a whole day, Prime 95 for at least 1 day. Don't just run them for a couple of hours each and think that proves much. If I leave Memtest-86 running for a day on my main system it finds a single bit error out of 1GB of RAM. The system runs as stable as anything, but facts is facts, there is a flaky bit in there. No point deluding myself. Might try reseating the memory this weekend.
