    Help me network my halls.

Alright, here goes, I need around 100meters of cable, 40 cable pins (or whatever they are called, the thing that actually connects to the router/computer) and an applier to mount the pins on the cable. Now, how much is that going to cost me? Do you have any recomended stores?

    cheers

You need the crimper (tool) rj45 plugs and cable - boots are aptional (but I preferr them)

Theres probably cheaper than there, but its early and I cba doing much of a search.
Crimping tools vary, from cheapish like that one upto rather serious ones for £50+, which if you do ALOT are worth it.

    So you want 40 x RJ45's, 100m of CAT5 cable, and a crimping tool.

    RJ45s - http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=54899 for 100.
    Cable - http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=57611 for 100 metres.
Crimperererer - http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=54896 (out of stock)

There you go... probably about the cheapest offer. For a crimping tool, as it's out of stock at Ebuyer, I think Maplin do one for around £15.

EDIT: Yes, the above site is cheaper, go there.

You guys are fast Cheers! The ****s here only have us on a 56k, which, we have to pay £40 to activate it! So net is out of the question (well the missus has it but I can't be arsed buying the connection) but at least we could do stuff with the lan.

    Once again, thank you both

Do what we did... share a 512k ADSL connection between about 10 people... This was about 3 years ago mind, £40 a month, £250 installation iirc... I think 1 year just now, including fees and modem can be had for as little as £250... or less... go on

How far's the nearest student accomodation to you? You and a few others could order Telewest 3mbit (very sweet connection, I get DVDs in 3hrs) or an ADSL 2mbit provider to that house.

Once installed, get some wireless equipment that supports detachable antenna's (D-Link 624+ does this) on both sides, bridge across the wireless lan using some decent antenna's and then split it on the LAN internally at the halls.

Just make sure your using WPA

I thought about that but the nearest house is around 500meters away, and I do not have eye contact unless I climb to the roof

I don't know, maybe I can go to the uni and ask them, they are going to demolish these blocks anyway!

What uni are you at ? Most halls come with Internet access (albeit a little filtered, nothing someone with a brain couldnt deal with).

Hmm, at our halls, we could get BT to install phones likes if we wanted, we just had to sign a form for it, saying we would be responsible for all costs, and to arrange dates for a BT Engineer to come on site. They were pretty cool about it iirc.

Did many people take it up? Overall speed affected by student population?
