    HDD Clean install and partition

    Hi All,

I recently posted regarding an upgrade, and settled on a new CPU, MOBO and some RAM. It was originally a self-build (my first), but when I set it up I omitted to partition my HDD, so just had everything, the OS, Documents, Games etc., on the one drive. As I’m installing the new kit, I was planning on doing a clean install, which would also allow me to set up the HDD properly. I was wondering whether you guys could advise on what would be the consensus for an optimum set up. How many partitions, size of partitions, what should go on each partition, and any other tips that might come in handy.

    Thanks for any help.

Assuming you only have one drive - and that this is going to be a Windows machine, then frankly you may as well leave it as one partition. Any partitioning you do is almost guaranteed to leave you short on space somewhere on the disk at some point, having to manually move files around because you forgot to change an install path. Save yourself the heartache, and just let Windows do its thing

Thanks Scaryjim. Yeah I only have the 1 physical drive and to be honest, I've been pretty happy with the single partition since I built the thing (in 09), but anyone who I've spoken to about it (and knows more than me, which is most :-)) says I should have partitioned the drive, and had the OS and apps separate from the main storage. Maybe I'll stick with the devil I know then!*

*That served me pretty well with regards to the Wife........
