monitor problem

hi all,
i bought a new monitor today and plugged it in and i tried to up the resolution from 1024x768 to 1280x1024 but it wont let me even though it should
any ideas?

As in the option isn't available in "right click > settings > properties > settings" or when you try to set it it reverts back to 1024 x768 or fails to display anything on the screen forcing you to reboot?

If the option isn't available install the latest drivers for your graphics card, if it is and the screen goes blank when you set the resolution above 1024 x 768 perhaps you're trying to use a HZ your monitor doesnt support (advanced > monitor) lower it.
