    USB Ports randomly stop

I am not one to ask for help as I'm usually pretty well versed on when things go wrong with a PC.

However this one is baffling me

USB devices intermittently & randomly just stop working, so I have to unplug all devices and reconnect them to get them up and running again, now this can work for a few days or a few minutes.

This isn't limited to the ports on the back panel, also includes the 2 on the front of the case.

Looking about the net this does seem to be a fairly common problem on Windows 7 but no real fixes or suggestions as to what could be causing it.

I have done all the usual stuff like checking connections on devices and also making sure everything like power is connected properly to the board.

Motherboard and spec is on left in drop down under my system.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Re: USB Ports randomly stop

Firstly, USB connectors seem to break easily - either the port itself or the jumper connection on the motherboard. Broken ports can mess up the controller and affect others. Same goes if you plug something in that's unstable or requires more power than the port/hub etc. can provide.

Check USB drivers as these can be either motherboard provided or chip specific (eg gigabyte vs NEC/Renesas vs Windows own drivers). Like some other drivers there could be old remains or problems installing versions on top of each other.

It might also be to do with power management - Win 7 has a lot of power saving options like disabling unused USB ports. You can generate a power report to see if Windows thinks the USB power modes are working correctly:

Kaniel literally summed everything up what I would have said plus added to it.
Your time has come to play detective and find the culprit behind all your frustration.

    Re: USB Ports randomly stop

I checked the power profiles yesterday and set the USB to disable suspend.

I have a feeling the culprit was a USB keyboard, I changed back to my wireless Microsoft yesterday and since then everything has worked fine, touch wood!
