    Question Dead Motherboard?

    ello Chaps & Chappettes,

Noob here in need of help

Just built up me lil bro's new PC & It won't power up, power is going to m/b (green led is on) and on pressing the on button it seems to lurch as if trying to start but then gives up....no fans get to rotate more than 1/2 a turn....

I suspect a dud m/b in need of RMAing

Anyone else got a suggestion of what could be up?

    Asus A7N8X-VM/400
    AMD2600XP
    512Mb RAM
    Q-tec micro case
    Asus Radeon 9600
    160Gb Seagate Barracuda

tried another PSU on it & the same problem is apparent...

I'm just 10mins from J3 M5, the Motorway side of Harborne.

Actually, thinking of that...i can take a video on me digicam of what it's doing...hmmmmmm

    **gets digicam out**

Vid1 - If you look carefully the m/b is getting power (green LED approx centre of case) 1.88Mb

Vid2 - This is all that happens when the button is pressed. 1.86Mb

    Yey

    Hurrah!

After lots of staring under a bright light, i finally discovered that the PSU had an extension cable on the motherboard power lead....this extension had 2 wires swapped around...

i cut the wires, reconnected them & badadum it works!

But the CPU is dead....it doesn't rain it pours!

    sure it's the cpu?

If you have a small 4 pin wire on your PSU try it with that plugged into the mobo and with it unplugged. Thats the cable for P4 systems but i dont think it's meant to do any harm when plugged in

    Confirmed, it was the CPU.

Sterling Service from Microdirect, i emailed them yesterday morning requesting an RMA number, posted the CPU at 4:30 recorded royal snail, got the email 14:40 this afternoon confirming the CPU was dead & i would be recieving a refund.

Bro is popping into Overclockers in Stoke to get another CPU - fingers crossed his comp should be up & runnin for some UT2004 by tomorrow eve

The prob is what if it is the mobo and it borked the CPU? sticking another one in might kill it? I did this when i use to work for a computer place, 5 mobos and 3 cpus i did in hahaha.

well just f@$*ed up my system today due to a faulty PSU (i think). Just got my DFI NF3 board and AMD64 3000+, put it all together then powered it on all i got was this wierd loud high pitched whine then *boom*, a bright flash and a horrid burning smell later i have a dead system . I guess i can count my lucky stars that it didn't take everything else in flames with it (at least i hope it didn't, haven't tested yet *fingers crossed*). Well yous gets what you pay for I'm spending hundreds on components then skimpng on a budget psu, what was i thinking!!! GRRR, gonna go test the 6800GT and 1Gb corsair RAM in my P4 SFF system now......

I had an Ebuyer 450watt clear PSU the same one as the 'clear' PSU sold by aria here http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductsList.a...ch&Category=96
I have read reviews which says they're quite good, but i know that my brothers 24/7 server which uses an antech 380watt truepower unit runs far more stable than my previous system ever did and with far more components (4xhdd raid, 2x cdroms, 1x tape drive etc). Anyway it makes sense on spending more money on a good PSU now after what i've experienced, i don't want to lose £600-£700 pounds of components to save £70-80 quid....

Hahaha just one more thing, an expensive PSU dosen't mean it's more reliable, just found out my friend just bought a Q-Tech 550watt PSU from maplins for £70!!! hahaha he said for that price it's gotta be good, i told him that i could get one online for ~£20...
Now i've tested everything in my SFF and they work fine (Grfx, HDD, DVDRW, and RAM) *phew*Can't test for the CPU and board though as i have no PSU to test 'em.
Well now i've gotta decide between a Coolmaster PSU or the new Antec Neo power, mmmm...
