OCZ goes bust

OCZ has just issued a press release announcing their filing for bankruptcy, which was expected since Nasdaq had halted the trading of OCZ stock earlier today. OCZ has had financial issues for quite a long time and it was just a matter of time before the inevitable happened. While OCZ did try to change its course by reforming their product portfolio when Ryan Petersen, the former CEO of OCZ, stepped down, it seems that the efforts weren't enough to make the business profitable.

They have an IP portfolio which players like Intel or Samsung are probably eyeing carefully, so I'm guessing someone will.

Ah, that will 'save' me £3 to send some of their unreliable RAM back (again) to the Netherlands.

But no surprise; only ever bought 4 OCZ things: a pair of 2x2GB DDR2 'gold', one 1GB DDR, and two PSUs. One of the PSUs died after 10 months or so and luckily Ebuyer refunded (just credited me, they didn't even want it back which is an indication of something). The other is still going AFAIK (don't own it) as is the 1GB of DDR. But the 2x2GB DDR2 kit was RMA'd about two years ago and just failed again recently.

In fact this week, I was just looking at it and had their RMA page up trying to see what I could write to convince them it was bad and that their 'gold' heatspreaders had become corroded despite the PC being kept in a warm and dry place since I expected them to look for any excuse to deny me the RMA. Guess that doesn't apply anymore.

Still I shouldn't complain too much. At least my earlier experience convinced me to give their SSDs a miss

I've avoided OCZ SSDs in the past when I saw how unreliable some of them were, I gather new ones are a bit better - just as well if everyone's warranty is about to disappear

Good riddance.

Their products caused me nothing but trouble. First with their SSDs and later with their silly warranty on PSUs. It took me 2 weeks of bouncing messages back and forth every day, to get a sensible partial refund off Ebuyer, for a 2 years old OCZ PSU. It was just too costly to send it off for warranty repair to Holland.

Oh wow, glad I didnt buy the OCZ fatality PSU. Feel bad for them, always thought of them as a nice brand to have.
