    silent heatsink

right, in my ever ongoing quest to have a silent PC (its a 24/7 server/MP3/MANE box)

    i have a silent X PSU (from the shuttle's)

i have a idea on installing this

    http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=63321

BUT removing the fan, thus is will be silent

its a duron 700 cpu, not overclocked (though the L1 points are bridged, im not bothering to OC

    thanks
    matt

    Whats the question/idea ...
I'll guess at "would the cpu overheat if that was fitted without a fan"
and go for the answer ... its a rather flimsy heatsink that needs air on it - so I reckon you'll kill the cpu if its anything apart from idle.

In my HTPC I have an uber quiet fan (10-15dba) it might be ok with something like that on it

that was the question YES, i was making the post with great haste, my 19 month daughter was lurking on the chair next to me, wanting to see the CBeebies website, thus the haste in the post

i guess my idea came from a search on the net

    http://www.plinkusa.net/weba11.htm

    and

    http://www.costcentral.com/proddetai...NK0040/C99049/

    and from the UK

    http://www.akasa.co.uk/spec/coolers/spec_ak_370_oem.htm

that was the idea, and i thought as they seem to be rated for bigger CPU's the 1 i have might have worked

dont really mind if i blow up the CPU (didnt cost me much) BUT dont want to blow the mobo

    are well, the quest continues

Those look like they're for 1U servers mate - and most servers have intake fans and/or ducting blowing the air over the top of the processor.

thanks for that, i didnt know, we all learn something new everyday

looks like i will have to put up with the noise

anyway to mod the fan so it churns out less noise

    i guess a normal 60mm Fan modd'd down to a lower volt

    60mm Fans

they are 24 dB and the fan i have is 24.26 dB, so about the same

if i modd'd it to 7 volts this would help, but it would need to run off a molex instead of the 3 pin fan mobo connector

or would it be better to use the existing fan at a lower volt ( 7 ) ????

if the 2nd option, how would i lower the volts with the 3 pin wire out (i dont solder, so a resistor isnt a option)

i did have a guide to replacing some pins in a molex to lower the volts, cannot find it at the moment , any 1 have a guide

    thanks

    http://www.bleedinedge.com/guides/7v...t_fan_mod.html

That'll be the 7v job, and it'd have to be molex mate.
What I'd do is leave the yellow (speed sensor) wire still in the 3 pin connector so that could still be plugged into mobo to monitor fan speed (make sure its still spinning) and put the other two wires into a molex to 7v them as per the above diagram.

    thanks once again

i guess a new fan is in order then, as the 3 pin connector doesnt have any of the barb'ed connectors that are used in a molex

or is there a way around this
