    Best HSF?

Righto, I need a new cooler for my XP3200.

I'm up for getting anything that will keep the bugger under 35c (preferably). I've so far tried the Colermaster Aero and Jet 7's, the Gigabyte Rocket and neither have kept it below 45c.

Without wanting to go for a water cooler, and money being 'no object', can someone please recommend me good'un.

Thermalright series is good, 900u/947u/sp94 etc etc.

The 120 one looks like a beast but only if you mobo (and case will accomodate it).

I've got the A7N8X-E with a large-ish Jeantech case. You sure that will be better then the Jet 7 I had?

I've also been checking out the Asus Star Ice which seems OK, but nobody seems to have any stock.

The Thermalright 120 isnt compatible with Socket A either unfortunately

Getting 35c under load with just a HSF is gonna difficult to be honest unless you can get a dead low ambient.

    Thats watercool temps tbh.

The best So462 HSF at the moment is the ThermalRight SI-97 (review - http://www.systemcooling.com/thermalright_si-97-01.html) it is compatiable with all mobos according to ThermalRight and looks damn good

    Thermalright SI-97

    Technical Specs:

    Dimension:

    L116 x W96 x H75 (mm) heatsink only, without fan

    Weight

    280g (heat sink only)

    Recommended Fan

    Maker: Panaflo (Panasonic)
    Model: FBL09A12M
    Size: 92 x 92 x 25 (mm)
    Bearing: Hydro Wave
    Voltage: 12V
    Speed: 2450 rpm
    Air Flow: 48 CFM
    Noise Level: 30.0 dBA
    Weight: 110g (3.88 oz)

    Compatibility

AMD: Athlon XP Palamino, Thoroughbred, and Barton 2800+ and up
If not an SLK-947U is a great choice to. Both work well with low CFM and noise fans.

    Both compatiable with your Asus

The SLK-947U is available from CPU City

ive got an aerolite, cost me £10 and performs admirably with my 2500+ oced at 2ghz!

no major probs, and fully adjustable, at hoover setting, cools it a further 5-8 degrees than medium (inaudiable)

The SI97 sounds ideal but nobody seems to have any in stock (pre-order only) and I kinda need something now to be honest.

I've got a Thermaltake Volcano 12, decent at cooling, the only downside being that it can be a bit noisy, but it's not so bad if you turn it down.

All high-performance air cooling is noisey. The TT Volcano 12 is the best for the money, and may be the best outright for socket A CPUs. I often use Venus 12s (same thing, but K8) for A64s as they are a great value and perform very well.

Another vote for the Volcano 12, was using it on an NF7S but used an older 4 blade Tt fan with it. Just swapped to A64 though and trying the XP-120. Not hugely impressed with it. Noticed more of an improvement with the Volcano 12 -v- stock.

I've got the Thermaltake Volcano 12, have it set to half-way speed and it cools my Athlon XP 2700+ at 40C, rarely goes above that even just after gaming. Also I'll be getting a new PSU(replacing my crappy Q-Tec) so it might cool things a bit more. One thing though is that if you set the speed to any faster than half-way it's bloody loud! Though you shouldn't have to set it that fast anyway, it's fine at half-way.

Thermalright stuff is the most extreme for sure but not worth the money. The world's record for aircooled systems on 3DMark2001 and 3DMark03 is held by an FX-53 with a Venus 12, not a Thermalright. The Volcano 12 is identical to the Venus 12 except for mounting brackets. Nuff said?
