    New build Dead :-(

The PC was working. I managed to install windows fine, installed a few other bits and turned it off.
Go to switch it back on and it's completely dead.
I've managed to stick a good PSU in, plugged in the power switch from an old case to the header, removed the graphics card, unplugged pretty much everything and it's still completly dead.
It's starting to look like the motherboard or CPU, i'm after a way i can try and identify which of these is at fault.
If i remove the CPU from the motherboard will the CPU fan at least spin when i hit the power button, i'm reasonably sure they won't post but if there was or wasn't a sign of life without the CPU installed would that at least be significant?

It won't post without a CPU.

Just chucking some ideas out for you:

    - Have you tried a different power cable as well as PSU? (and made sure socket works - you never know)
    - Make sure 24pin and 8/4 pin power are secured to motherboard, when new these sometimes don't latch and may have come away.
    - I can't remember for sure but I think you should get some life from fans without a CPU even if just an initial spin then stop.
    - Paperclip test on PSU - it may have been a good PSU before you plugged it in.

Thanks for the responce, i think i've exhausted all possible testing now. Must be mainboard, CPU i can't test unfortunatly it's an I5 and my other machine is an AMD. But it seems mainboard should switch on although not post without CPU. The power supply fan and CPU fans should at least spin up and they don't.
The power supply was tested in another machine after the PC died, so i know it's good, i even pulled the case power switch cable out and used it to switch on another machine. Aswell as trying another PSU in the machine with the same results, the PSU in the computer i'm using now.
The common denominator is the mainboard must be dead. All the pins for the CPU look good too, which makes sence as it was working for a few hours.
I've emailed scan, we'll see how that goes.

Could also be the ram, but yes it does sound like it's the cpu or motherboard, and very hard to test without a working motherboard/cpu of the same socket type to test the parts on.

As to fans coming on without a cpu, it depends on the motherboard, some will some won't

    Re: New build Dead :-(

What CPU and what motherboard is (or was) it?
Just asking because I've seen people stick 95W i5's into puny little low-end boards designed for 65W TDP max. CPUs.
Usually doesn't take long to kill either the board, CPU or both (CPU VRM fails, frying the CPU in the process)..

If the board turns on without the CPU installed, doesn't turn on with the CPU installed, and turns on if you have the CPU installed but leave the 4pin 12V or 8pin EPS plug near the CPU off, things definitely point towards the CPU. Thing is: it might still be the board that killed it.

Try to find/get a motherboard to test the (usually more valuable) CPU with. If it works on the test-board, it's obviously the new-build-board that's shot. If it doesn't work on the test-board, I'd be very wary of the new-build-board. Both the CPU and the new-build-board should be considered "fried" in that case.

I would guess motherboard as you have tested the PSU.

Just make sure you haven't bent any pins in the cpu socket....
