    NAS case only?

I have a 2TB WD Green HDD I would like to add into a NAS that I can then simply plug into my router and use a Raspberry Pi & XBMC + remote to stream stuff from it to my TV.

Can anyone recommend the cheapest possible enclosure only that would allow me to fit the 3.5" HHD into it and do the above? I would also ideally like to be able to access files from other PCs, my phone etc over the internet.

    Something like this...

    Cheers

edit: Sorry, wrong forum. Can this please be moved to Hardware? thanks

    Re: NAS case only?

    Probably that especially with DLNA

You can get USB to NAS adapters but I wouldn't really bother with them, they are more hassle than they are worth and I never found the performance to be great

Probably better suited in the hardware / networking boards though

Sounds good, didn't even notice the DLNA capability. Will have one last quick search, and buy it at lunchtime! cheers

    Re: NAS case only?

Or how about one of these:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/430446-hp-prol...yer-704941-421

    ?

(before they are phased out in favour of the much more expensive G8 version)

Obviously this is a roll your own solution - not plug and play - so more hassle as well as more expensive, but it also has the potential to let you do more if you need to.

    Edit:

£10 cheaper on the BT store:

    Re: NAS case only?

Thanks for the suggestion, but way out of my budget. This is only meant to be the basics really, streaming files to raspberry Pi/computers and mobile phone and allowing me to back up stuff from mobile to the NAS.

    EDIT:
Currently it is one or the other of the above 2, but I am trying to work out whether the Buffalo is worth £30 more. It is sold as ''3 times faster then standard NAS'' and USB3 but aside from that they look identical.

With the USB3, I imagine a cable form that into my USB3 laptop would mean I get much faster transfer rates?

As for the ''3 times faster then standard NAS'' - can anyone elaborate on what they mean by that? Surely read speed makes no difference as providing it can handle full HD (which most NAS can...) then what will i gain from it? Surely 3 times faster write speed will be limited by USB? ...os is that where USB3 comes in?

    Buffalo - £85

    Re: NAS case only?

Deadline was fast approaching for the next day delivery for the weekend so I have gone for the Buffalo! Will try and remember to report back when I receive it.

    What swung me:

    USB3, for mem stick transfers
Hexus review - approved of it & commented it is faster, decent new GUI, and recommended it at £140!
D-link had some dodgy reviews regarding their customer support - something I value!
£30 isn't much over the use I hope to have out of it

    Re: NAS case only?

Sorry to hijack mate but your thread was related to mine! I am looking a new server case that can hold quite a few disks (about 8 or so). Can anyone recommend a case like this:

    http://uk.hardware.info/news/28944/s...y-raid-systems

I am aware that this is an enclosure. But I would like something like this which I could install windows on.

Or at the very least, attach it to my HP Microserver.

My WHS server is getting long in the tooth now. (The original WHS not the newer software).

    Re: NAS case only?

Sorry I can't help you Neon, but for others looking the Buffalo is fantastic! Easy to set up PROVIDING!! you follow the instructions properly, I kept deviating from them and then wondering why nothing worked. Following them sorted it swiftly! Customer service was good (telling me to follow instructions!!), and now have it backing up my mobile, accessible from the web and streaming to everything.

Combined with the raspberry Pi i have an utterly brilliant little media setup for £100!
