    What to get?....

    Hi all,

I am thinking of getting a new component for my PC and can't decide which! My PC specs are:

    i7 930 2.8Ghz
    Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
    6GB RAM
    MSI GTX 770 OC
    1TB HDD

I only game and would like something to actually improve performance but is within my £150 budget and give it a couple of more years!

    Many thanks,

    Diymho

Can't improve gaming performance for that budget, but an SSD will improve overall computer performance outside of gaming.

Go for a Plextor. Cheaper it will be and the performange just as good (or pretty close)

    Re: What to get?....

SSD. I suggest an 120GB Intel S3500 for around £120. You can get bigger & cheaper alternatives, I know, but Intel is most likely to last the longest, as per RMA statistics and overall reputation.

I've had an 80GB boot drive (Intel X25-M G2) for the past 4 years and it still has 30GB free. You can manage very easily with 80GB if you remember to keep games, media files & perhaps the pagefile on a spinning drive.

The 100GB S3700 (the enterprise version) is about £40 over your limit, otherwise I'd suggest that.

    This will do the trick:

It even is an MLC drive IIRC.

+1. SSD a better bet. Best available high-end bang for buck is the SSD Samsung Evo. Other contenders are the plextor M5 pro or crucial M4/M5 but they don't fare as well in reviews. I'd go Samsung as you have the budget. Job done.

    +1 to SSD.

Otherwise I'd look at peripherals (headphones, keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers etc) as they can make a far bigger difference to games than upgrading what's in the box.

You aren't going to get a general computing improvement with RAM either, like I said. So not sure what RAM would help with unless you have a specific requirement (which you'd know about!)

Monitor isn't a bad alternative either depending what the existing one is.

How would you not get an general computing increase from RAM? have you tried playing bf4 with 1GB ram?

He's already got 6GB RAM, not 1GB. How would adding more RAM increase general computing performance when general computing is fine with 2GB, let along 6?

Another vote for and SSD, otherwise I'd probably hunt for a nice gaming mouse, keyboard & headset for £120
