taming the beast (or cooling a monster)

    << AMD 9590

lovely chip - running under an H80. now heres the problem. when set to 5ghz , the H80 on its own (2x120mm fans in exhaust push/pull , with 2 x 1200mmm intake on case) isn't man enough at all to cool it. had a throttle then shut down when overclocking

    needed extra airflow for

so - suggestions? happy to ditch this H80 if I can find something a lot better.

The H100 comes up on sale a fair bit, lately. It's the early version, not the H100i.
I picked one up and it seems perfectly happy cooling my Corsair 500R build with both fans pulling fron the top... Think it cost me just £35 at the time.

Unfortunately this sort of cooling levels and liquid cooling esp gets messy, there's so many factors involved.

Most of it will require you to do tests with various layouts and different components in your particular setup to get the best results.

There's no one "get this/do this" fix.

There's things you can try, eg increasing fan &/or pump speeds, if they are not running flat out that is. check the fan seal around the radiator (is there a gap between fan and rad that air can leak out off)
Have you cleaned the radiator recently? if the rad is chocked with dust mats then you can see major performance impact.

Overall we'd need to know a lot more detail about your given setup.

Or you could try dropping the overclock

Re: taming the beast (or cooling a monster)

I would second the h100 as an upgrade over the h80

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/corsa...ator-plus-2-fa

seems the prices have gone up quite a bit as there are few of them left instock

alternativly replace the stock fans with Sp120's although im not sure it would make enough difference in the end.

Personally for that sort of overclock and heat output on a old and toasty chip I would advocate a complete custom water cooling rig but thats a lot of money to spend for such an old setup.

Re: taming the beast (or cooling a monster)

Need a larger radiator to cool more efficiently, a custom loop ideally, or one of these with the SR1 rad option: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...-020-TL&tool=3

Re: taming the beast (or cooling a monster)

    Use a proper cooler

Try the Phanteks TC 14 PE? Or the Noctua (although they're so ugly in my opinion). That CPU is a monster and definitely requires more than a single 120 radiator.

Re: taming the beast (or cooling a monster)

I just upgraded from a H60 to a H100i on my 3570K, and my temps were too good on my 4.2Ghz overclock, so bumped it to 4.5, and it still keeps it below 70 degrees on auto voltage.

Get a dual rad loop like the H100/H110i or the new thicker H105 if your case can cope.
