    Dead?

I boot up after building a new rig, the Primary Master Hard Disk is detected, in the BIOS I set it as the first boot device, then the BIOS does it thing and then says 'Please insert proper boot device or go away' when it should be loading Windows.

Dead hard drive? Its my old faithful 60gb IBM model.

    S'cotta be, aint it?

I doubt it. Stick it in another machine and try and access it using an existing Windows install. If that works, then it's fine.

If not dead, what then? What do you suggest?

I think I'll just buy another one to be honest. Its worth nowt, and needs upgrading, and the hard drive in my sig should be here soon, pending stock.

No matter what, it just moans about inserting a proper boot device. Bloody PCs!

'Please insert proper boot device or go away'
    Bwahahahah! Brilliant!

Anyway, your problem. Sounds to me like your boot partition just isn't set bootable. Load up the recovery console of XP or 2000 or whatever (Boot off the install CD, then select Repair, then take the Console option), and then use the fixmbr command ("fixmbr /?" for instructions on how to use it). Hopefully that sorts it.

Edit: Oops - I mean, fixboot, not fixmbr. The command is "fixboot <drive letter>:" Sorry about that.

Can't really do that. Tried it, but it took about 5 minutes to get to 'inspecting hardware configuration' then just sat there doing nothing until I gave up.

    What's going on?

So, can't boot from the hard drive, can't boot from the DVD drive, and also, the BIOS seems to frezee or at least get very slow in reacting to what I press if I go into 'Hardware Monitor' in the BIOS.

    , a thousand times

Its all brand new stuff and the motherboard was testing as working 24 times before being sent to me.

    I give up.

Update: I tried it again (booting from the DVD drive) but without the Hard Drive plugged in, and this time, it didn't freeze at the 'Inspecting Hardware Configuration' bit, it went straight to the Blue Screen of Loading and said things like 'Press F2 is you want to do this, Press F3 if you don't' etc.

So, now... do we think its deffo a cocked hard drive, to use the technical term?

It sounds like that may indeed be the case. A pity, really. Hopefully you're not losing anything you don't have backed up. :/
