help with old pc100 memory well i think it is :s

hi my mates got an old emachines e120 desktop which has an astounding 64 meg of ram

anyways couple of years ago it was very unstable and would crash all the time thanks to windows ME so i stuck in windows xp for him knowing it would be slow but the plan was to get some more ram quite quickly but he never bothered and just plods on useing his pagefile as ram basically lol , anyways i was up yesterday trying to use his pc and was ready for throwing it out the window!

i need to find out what ram his pc will take as crucial doesnt list it , i check myself and it had a sticker with pc100 on it and it certainly looked like it with 2 notches in the bottom of it , it was also single sided ram and only one one stick

do you think the new board will support double sided ram ?

another mate is going to loan me a stick of pc100 he has lying around somewhere to try in it and see if it really is pc100 then we can order new ram for him

do i need to have matched pairs eg 2x 128 mb or 2x 256 as it currently runs on 1 x 64mb single sided ram

what do u reckon the max this system can take 512 or 256 ?

It sounds like it'll take any sort of SDRAM, PC100 or PC133, single or double sided. PC133 will just run at PC100 speeds.

If it's fast enough to run XP, it'll accept any SDRAM

lol it aint fast ..... its like bullet time in max payne or the matrix when your useing his pc

forgot to mention its an old 850 celeron one with a small core not te ones with the heat spreader !
im hopeing it can take any ram especially a combo of different size

if my other mate comes up with a stick of 128 hopefully that combined and working with the current 64 will show him a bit more speed compared to what hes used to
    cheers for the reply !

hmm its listed cpu's for the board only go upto 500mhz when his is an 850 :S
not to worry gives me a firm telling that it will support 256 max with a 2x 128 setup

will 256 run xp fairly smoothly for very basic running ? i have no doubt it will be better than his current 64mb !

also , do you think if i made him a custom nlite'd xp cd and cut out most of the crap in it that would help him further ?

i know he would be better spending money on a new pc but its really just a word processor and used for downloading and playing music files really
