    RAM question

I am looking for another 512mb of RAM for my PC. I have an ASRock K7S8XE motherboard and an athlon xp 3200 CPU. I was looking on ASRock's site, when I saw this:

"According to SiS official document, SiS 748 chipset has limitation DDR
    supports:
CPU at FSB 200MHz mode, it will NOT support DDR400"

    (bottom of page http://www.asrock.com/product/product_k7s8xe.htm)

I was told in a different post that my processor had a 200mhz FSB, so can I simply not get any DDR400 memory at all? Will I have to go for, say, DDR333 and if so how much 'worse' will this be than DDR400?

    Thanks, James

What RAM do you have now?

Edit: I think when it says 200 FSB it means 100 FSB - never heard of an Athlon with 400FSB! So I think the one you should be looking at is 400 FSB (since the 3200+ runs at 200 FSB), which runs fine with DDR400/PC3200 RAM.

try crucial memory selector and input in your mobo, and see wot it comes up with, try updating the bios as it may then allow you to accept (more) RAM and poss ddr400 aswell!

I went to crucial's memory selector and this is what it came up with:

So basically are you guys saying that (especially after i update my mobo's bios) DDR400 should be fine?

I think it should be fine before updating your BIOS - just seems to me that the website has doubled all of the FSB speeds for some reason.

Thanks for clearing that up mike & muddyfox (thanks especially for helping me out for the second time, mike).

Unless i come across another problem, I think I will either get some crucial CT6464Z40B, kingston KVR400X64C3A/512 or kingston KVR400X64C25/512; that should do the job considering the low price I'm aiming for.

    Thanks again
    James

Just a point - in the unlikely case that your PC can't use PC3200 RAM, you can run the RAM at a lower speed anyway.
