    budget lapptop

Ok, my dad and i are looking to get a laptop - becuase everyone else has got one!

    - it will proberbly spend most of its time in my sisters room surfing clothing and fashion rubish, and tlak to "m8s" on MSN (becuase i have a PC, and my brother is the smallest, so dosnt have a life outside of slavary)

    - it will also proberbly go on holiday with us to suport the Digtal camara/MP3 players, and thay HDD based video camera that my dad like the look of....

anyways, its never going to do any of the real work, so it dont have to be fast, it needs to have wireless internet, and i will proberbly be runing winXPpro, and if it could play "age of empires" so much the better

    - the problem is, there are so mean, and i can just duck out and build it myself like i do with all our other PCs

    - so what should i bee looking at in the low budget, sub £500 area???

Dell Inspiron 1000, with a WiFi card in the expansion slot.

Or a ThinkPad (my preferred option), again with WiFi card and a RAM upgrade.

I bought a Dell Inspiron 1000 a few weeks ago. At the time it was the cheapest new laptop available in the UK (even cheaper than Tiny's Via C3 offering). I'm very happy with it. I installed a 3com wireless card (£20 on Ebay) and can now surf the net wirelessly from anywhere in my house, and share files with my other computers. With its 2.2 ghz Celeron and on-board SIS graphics it is obviously somewhat limited, but it boots into XP faster than my "play" computer listed below. My only criticisms of it so far are:
    - one dead pixel
    - noisy HDD
    - 256mb memory is just not enough
    - no CD rewriter
