Angry Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 anyone?

anyone else here own a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120GB ATA/133 HDD? because i got one earlier this year, purely as a storage device for my laptop (which only has a Hitachi 40Gb drive) and i am having serious problems...

today, for the third time, the drive completely died on me - windows recognises it as "Local Disk (E:)" instead of my labelled "External (E:)" and when i try to open it it gives me an error about it being unreadable... having it connected slows the whole system, as if it is constantly trying to detect the drive.

as i am running through usb, i am unable to use any of the maxtor drive tools, dos doesnt like usb lol! i tried to make a dos bootable disc, but with no success.

anyway, what i did is i installed "stellar phoenix fat & ntfs" a nifty little program to help recover some of my more valuable data, but only have a about 10gb free on my laptop, i will lose like 100gb of data!

well, as i mentioned, this is the 3rd time it has happened, and you can imagine how annoying this is! is it something that im doing? or is it a faulty drive? can i just send it to maxtor and theyll send me a shiny new one?

    cheers

jumpers are fine, have had it set to master and slave and it works a-ok, although its failed on each one - on master, and on slave... if only i had a way to boot into dos and still be able to access over usb, maybe i should wait till my new pc arrives and then stick on an internal ide?

Sounds like a very dodgy drive, mate. I've got 3 of the 120GB SATA drives and I've not had any problems so far.

    cheers,

you can try western digitals windows diagnostics program which should work with the drive over usb and that will tell you if the driver is faulty or not

I brought the same drive earlier this week in a Icy Box USB case.

And yesterday, I noticed that XP didn't show the drive Reset the PC & drive and everything was fine again I put it down to heavy drive usage over USB, as Desktop was resetting and XP running slow. Drive was also 75%+ defragmented

I read that firewire gives the same speed with less system overheads?

I ran the quick Western Digital test and found no problems

Hope this drive is'nt going to die on me as just copied (nearly there) all my CD collection.

To solve the PC slowdown I was thinking about buying this NAS

Had a serious change of mind about the Linksys NAS,as it re-formats the drive and uses a linux file system, losing the ability to hot plug into another xp machine

A lot of the cheap stuff has very bad rep for this kinda thing.
Its really worth while buying maxtors own brand one. Its a bit more expensive yeah, but its really worth it in the long run.
If the drive is working fine after you format it, id be looking more tomwards the enclosure.

could it just be a cheap usb interface that interupts the proper flow of data? hence corrupting the drive itself? so in theory, if i put on an actual ide to the mobo, it *should* be fine?

Thats what im guessing, that or somthing power related (Maxtors are pretty picky on a good PSU).
Put it in a desktop machine, and run Maxtors disk utility on it, that will tell you if somthing is up.
