    Re: pc not working

how long was it running with no heatsink? If it was long enough to get the fluid sufficiently hot that the pipes felt 'very hot' to the touch then it sounds an awful lot like you've cooked the cpu.

    Re: pc not working

The CPU should shut down before it gets hot enough to fry.

What does the DRAM LED mean? If it's saying things are OK then try resetting CMOS.

The system fans that do spin - are they connected to fan headers on the motherboard or to fan/adapters connected directly from the power supply?

    Re: pc not working

Quick question: when you said you booted, then noticed that the CPU got hot (not sure how you managed to determine that when you could boot properly) plus you noticed that one of the pipes got hot - how long was the time factor involved in the above mentioned events cause seems like you were looking at it and touching it as it were boiling away :-D sorry, just joking.

Kaniel is right, modern CPUs should shut down before reaching temperatures causing permanent damage.

Try removing everything non essential, only keep the Mobo with cleared CMOS or BIOS plus the CPU plus a cooler (don't have to be the shiny new Extreme, any Intel stock is fine) plus a single stick or memory and see where you will get with those.
As soon you manage to boot with bare essentials, start adding other components. If you have spare components to swap around, do so!

To me it smells the Mobo...I changed many FANs while the PC was running, never a problem.

    Re: pc not working

It's been pretty much impossible to cook a CPU since the P3 days. Everything since then (socket 939 on AMD) had a thermal cut off.
Here is a really old video showing what happened when you removed the heatsink on older systems: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y39D4529FM4

Edit button still works by the way, and you can use the multi-quote icon to reply to more than one person at a time rather than post four times in a row.

What combination of cards and display outs have you tried?

    Re: pc not working

Did you removed everything and left only the motherboard, CPU, a simple dedicated GPU and a single memory module for testing?

If the above mentioned components failed to boot successfully together, means you have to replace one or more components.

If the above mentioned components managed to boot successfully together, means you can start to add other components till you reach full configuration or you hit a component preventing successful boot.

Let us know of the outcome.

    Have a nice day!

    Re: pc not working

Do you hear any 'beep' sounds? Did you ever hear the single 'Beep' from the Asus Board, when it had finished the 'POST'? If you did hear any beeps, one thing you can try is to remove all memory from the motherboard - the BIOS looks for 64k of memory, if it doesn't find any it will give you an error beep. If it does, at least part of the BIOS/Motherboard is working - if not the mb is fried.
