Hey, I've got a bit of a problem. I want to buy a laptop, but I'm in the $300 price range. Now I know the laptop ain't going to have a lot of RAM, so I want to know how to install more if possible.

Look for SODIMM RAM which is compatible with the system. Might want to check how much RAM is actually supported by the laptop. There is usually 1-2 slots available for RAM upgrades.

That's the one thing to watch for, laptops only have 2 ram slots, sometimes a laptop will come with one stick of ram sometimes two sticks.
If you're ordering online you may well find very little detailed information on the specifics of the laptop, so a site way well list a laptop as having 4gb of ram but not if it's one 4gb stick or two 2gb sticks.
While all SODIMMs (laptop ram sticks) should work I have encountered some issues in the past with cheapest ram stick not being recognised by some laptops, personally I tend to go with Crucial ram for laptops.
One last note, laptop ram speed generally runs at the lowest speed of the sticks used.
So when buying an additional stick to upgrade sometimes it's actually cheaper to buy faster ram than the original that's there, running ram slower than it's listed speed is not a problem.
Just remember you cannot run ddr2 in a ddr3 slot and vis versa

Yes and no, it can depend on the laptop, esp for something like a 16gb stick, you'd need to check what's the max size the laptop can support, both in individual sticks and in total.
But in principle yes.
One thing I would say is that if the laptop has a single 4gb stick then it probably has an empty slot, so just adding in an 8gb stick as well to bring the total to 16gb is probably more likely to work.
Although I would ask what you're doing that needs that much ram?
edit: most ddr3 SODIMM only goes up to 8gb in single stick AFAIK

do you have a link for the laptop you want for $300? at that price point , gaming wont be the best experience
I don't know exactly what computer I'll get. I just know in that price range it won't have much RAM, maybe 4GB or so. With that in mind I want more RAM so the games will flow smoother than that of 4GBof crap. Are you saying adding 16GB to it won't be enough for a decent experience?

To change the GPU in a laptop where you can change it? Usually the GPU itself costs around $200-300 :-D
Rather tell us what you would like to play and how much you can pour into the machine now (later you can add maybe some RAM or HDD/SSD or even if very unlikely the CPU).
I still think an APU laptop would be the best value for you.
EDIT: HP Pavilion 15-n211dx for $360. What I could find closest to your budget what allows you to play some games (maybe most of them with lowered details). Specifications.
