Advice please on choosing a RAID storage solution, potentially NAS

    Hi all,

For the past few years I've added three Western Digital My Book Studio II units to my Mac setup, chained over FW800, set on RAID1 for mirroring. These are dual-drive solutions that are at most rather simple.

However, as of late it's time I move onto something a bit more serious and am considering the WD My Cloud EX4

My Aunt is visiting Australia, hence links for stuff located there. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like the auzzie Amazon site sells anything more than books and Kindle stuff. Ordering challenges aside, is this a decent NAS to go for?

What about things like Drobo etc.? Or should I just stick to getting a Western Digital Thunderbolt Duo 8TB setup?

Thanks in advance for any advice received.

    Best M.

What is it you are using them for?

For archiving my photos and automatic backups and such, I have a windows home server box, which is filled with Western Digital Green Power drives, that agressively save power. I don't need much speed from them, and they are used mostly by automated processes whilst I sleep for house keeping work.

If you are doing something like video editing I'd have a different recommendation as you are doing high throughput. If you are doing something like file server thing accessed by multiple clients with a mixed read-write pattern, I'd again recommend something else too!

Good point! Mostly archival, and my current WD units also have the green drives. What I find most annoying about them it that they take a while 'spooling' up.

This slows my Mac down as finder (similar to Window's explorer) is blocked until all the attached drives spool up. That said, from a NAS based solution I'd like to be able to stream 1080p mkv/mp4's to my home theatre setup.

    Ta!
