New PC

Hey all,

I am looking to build a new PC in the somewhat near future, I have a budget of about £1000 to spend on a machine (Don't need monitor, keyboard, mouse - I have some HDD's / SSD's that I can re-use as games drives / storage drives so would only need a drive for the OS), has been a while since I last built a machine so a little out of sync with whats hot and whats not.

The main use will be gaming and I'd like it to last as long as possible, have looked at the overlocked bundles that SCAN do and they look ideal but I'm not sure which gives the best bang for buck.

I would prefer something Intel / NVidia based.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Make that a 4790K, which is out on the 25th I would go for a Crucial MX100 512Gb myself, rather than the Samsung.

What resolution is your monitor, & what sort of games do you tend to play?

Stick with your Core i7 950 - overclock if you have not already.

Buy a new graphics card.

The GTX780TI is a waste of money. Either get a GTX770 or a GTX780 if you really want to stick with Nvidia.However,an R9 290 is much cheaper than the latter at times.

My motherboard doesn't fully support PCI-E (I think) so wont that cause a bottleneck? :/

PCI-E 2.0 should be fine with a single GPU card.

ATM,your graphics card is you major limiting factor.

You need to consider that its probably best waiting until Skylake,PCI-E 4.0 and DDR4 at the end of next year or early 2016.

An overclocked Core i7 950 and a decent card should serve you well IMHO.

Sure,the latest Core i7 is technically faster,but I would always try out a new graphics card first and overclock your CPU.

Upgrade when you actually hit a noticeable CPU bottleneck - that way you get the latest tech too.

Do you know on Ebay there are cheap six core,ex-server Xeons being sold for under £100??

In that case I might just buy a new GPU and see how it goes.

CPU isn't overclocked and system is only running on air, that with the fact I've never really overclocked makes me not want to try overclocking :/

Definitely upgrade the gpu before your CPU, Cat's completely right, you will be very underwhelmed with a cpu upgrade right now. I run an I7 920, albeit overclocking the balls off it at times, but i really don't see myself upgrading the cpu until 2015/16 as nothing I do is cpu limited. Your GPU could definitely do with an upgrade if it cant keep up with the games you play at the resolution you play however and there I think you will notice the best bang for buck!

So, the opinion seems to be that if I just upgrade the GPU, I shouldn't see any noticeable issues running a PCI-E 3 based card on PCI-E 2?
