New HDD Formating

Always formatted a new HDD as a slave while in Windows.

But I was wondering can I put a brand new HDD straight in as the only HDD in the comp setup and format it via xp installation?

Yes, XP setup gives you the option to create and format partitions during the initial setup procedure.
