So much for both companies being respected brands... I nearly bought a kingston SSD a few weeks ago, but as luck turned out (after reading this) I am glad I did not.

Kingston memory sells on their reputation and trust in the products, and this sort of thing could be highly damaging to their core business. I wonder whether the decision to downgrade came from the top or happened within the storage division (or even the factory)?

I don't think the switch was intentional. Just something that they had to do in order to maintain the current price point. Kingston should have at least told consumers considering the switch did noticeably drop performance. I haven't seen any data for the new controllers in PNY drives so i cant make a judgement there.

Hopefully not many. I nearly went into a Kingston SSD 2 weeks ago. Pfff. Good job that the Crucial M500 was 50p cheaper xD

ofc it was intentional , you cannot expect to swap between NAND type and expect everything else to stay the same!

Got to agree on that. I am working for a UK manufacturer making un-disclosed products and the practices we are using on production level sometimes are quite shocking (I know because I have to pass on those orders thus contribute willingly to the devaluation of the UK manufacturing quality), but the management does it happily even just to save a penny. Literally save a penny (apparently it adds up but not even 1000x cuts can compensate for even one useless pencil pushers in the office. Sadly...).

This is not a fair thing to do. If they wanted to use inferior parts, why not release a new model using these parts? Then the customer can decide if they want it or not.

I think Steve Jobs one said "People don't know what they want until you give it to them". Maybe they adopted the same philosophy My company don't tell the customers either when we start to use inferior parts, you only see the increases number of RMA cases.

    Pretty common in all countries.

Had coloured LEDs in a product swapped for all red ones because they were cheaper. No involvement from engineering in the process, the buyers decided the parts were equivalent. Made customer support almost impossible if you couldn't say "is the blue LED on".

Re: Kingston and PNY caught using cheaper parts in their SSDs after good reviews

It's a shame that two great companies would stoop so low just to raise their profit margins even higher at the cost of their reputation. I also nearly bought a Kingston SSD but will now go for a Crucial one instead.
